The Musical Passion Transmitted by Carmina Burana [Eng-Esp]

Hello hivers friends! This video I share with you is part of our rehearsals this week, I asked the favor to Jhoxiris to record it as she is the leader of the soprano row of my choral group and have more freedom to move when it comes to work. After so many months of musical inactivity for personal reasons that I have already exposed on the platform, today will be my first official concert of this year, and I vibrate with excitement knowing that it will be one of my favorite works of my life, Carmina Burana.

Este video que les comparto es parte de nuestro ensayos de esta semana, le pedí el favor a Jhoxiris que lo grabara al ser la jefe de la fila de sopranos de mi agrupación coral y tener más libertad de moverse a la hora de trabajar. Luego de tantos meses de inactividad musical por motivos personales que ya he expuesto en la plataforma, hoy será mi primer concierto oficial de este año, y vibro de emoción que saber que será una de mis obras favoritas de toda mi vida, Carmina Burana.

The excerpt I am sharing with you is the musical number that opens and closes the concert, the famous Oh Fortuna, which has worked so well commercially that everyone knows its harmony, whether they are lovers of academic music or not. There is a lot of information that I have compiled throughout my career regarding Carmina Burana; the most important thing to share with you is that it is a series of medieval texts that were found in a monastery in the 19th century. The German composer Carl Orff set these texts written in Latin and German to music and their impact on the musical world has been well received.

El extracto que les comparto es el número musical que da inicio y cierre al concierto, el famoso Oh Fortuna!, que a nivel comercial ha funcionado tanto que todo el mundo conoce su armonía, sean o no amantes de la música académica. Hay mucha información que he recopilado a lo largo de mi carrera respecto a Carmina Burana; lo más importante a compartirles es que son una serie de textos medievales que fueron encontrados en un monasterio en el siglo XIX. El compositor alemán Carl Orff le puso música a estos textos escritos en latín y alemán y su impacto en el mundo musical ha sido bien recibido.

I have always considered that for choristers it is a work that has no major harmonic difficulty, and I think I am not wrong about that, although I do admit that you have to have a great capacity of vocal technique to be able to interpret it and resist it until the end, since the cantata consists of 24 musical numbers and the first one is repeated, which is usually one of the highest for tenors and sopranos. The singing of the baritone soloist stands out, who always sings with the choir and must have the vocal skills even of a tenor to reach all the notes, the soprano must also be a very virtuous person to keep very, very long notes and sing very high notes but in piano, that is, at a low volume of sound, a very complicated task. There is also a tenor soloist, usually played by a countertenor because he is very high-pitched. In conclusion, I feel that the musical part of the chorus is easy to study and learn, but the composer did not reserve anything when writing for the soloists of the work.

Siempre he considerado que para los coralistas es una obra que no tiene mayor dificultad armónica, y creo que no me equivoco en ello, aunque sí admito que hay que tener una gran capacidad de técnica vocal para poder interpretarla y resistirla hasta el final, ya que la cantata consta de 24 números musicales y se repite el primero que suele ser uno de los más agudos para los tenores y las sopranos. Se destaca el canto del barítono solista que siempre canta junto al coro y debe tener destrezas vocales incluso de un tenor para llegar a todas las notas, la soprano también debe ser una persona muy virtuosa para mantener notas muy, muy largas y cantar agudos muy agudos pero en piano, osea, a bajo volumen de sonido, una labor bastante complicada. También existe un tenor solista, generalmente interpretado por un contratenor por ser muy agudo. En conclusión, siento que la parte musical del coro es fácil de estudiar y aprender, pero el compositor no se reservó nada al escribir para los solistas de la obra.

The Niños Cantores de Venezuela will also accompany us in this concert, as the work has two numbers in which a children's choir participates. Something that surprises everyone about Carmina Burana is that its lyrics are dedicated to love, fortune, spring, but there is also a lot of clandestinity where songs are dedicated to drinking and lust. I say it is surprising because these texts were found in a monastery, and there is literally a lot of perversion in them. It is a totally profane work even though it was possibly written by monks in the Middle Ages.

Los Niños Cantores de Venezuela también nos acompañarán en este concierto, ya que la obra tiene dos números donde participa un coro infantil. Algo que a todos sorprende del Carmina Burana es que sus letras están dedicadas al amor, la fortuna, la primavera, pero también hay mucha clandestinidad donde se dedican cantos a la bebida y a la lujuria. Digo que es sorprendente porque estos textos se encontraron en un monasterio, y literalmente hay mucha perversión en ellos. Es una obra totalmente profana aunque posiblemente haya sido escritas por monjes de la edad media.

This cantata will be presented today, Saturday, April 15. In a few hours at the Centro Nacional de Acción Social por la Música in Caracas. There are two important details, the first one is that we will be conducted by a guest Maestro from Switzerland, his name is Roger Carlsson. The second is that for the first time I will perform this work as it was originally intended: with two pianos and the percussion instruments of an orchestra plus the choir and soloists. I've sung Carmina Burana a dozen times, but it's always been with a symphony orchestra filled with lots of violins, trumpets and so on, but the version we'll be doing today will be as close to the basics as possible, and that has me very excited.

Esta cantata la vamos a presentar hoy sábado 15 de abril. Dentro de unas horas en el Centro Nacional de Acción Social por la Música en Caracas. Hay dos detalles importantes, el primero de ellos es que seremos dirigidos por un Maestro invitado de Suiza, se llama Roger Carlsson. Lo segundo es que por primera vez voy a interpretar esta obra como se pensó originalmente: con dos pianos y los instrumentos de percusión de una orquesta más el coro y los solistas. He cantado el Carmina Burana una docena de veces, pero siempre ha sido con una orquesta sinfónica llena de muchos violines, trompetas y demás, pero la versión que haremos hoy será lo más parecido a lo básico, y eso me tiene muy emocionado.
