Celebrating 17 Years of Artistic Trajectory with a Grand Gala Concert

Hello, I hope you are well. My musical group, the National Choir "Simon Bolivar" of Venezuela has just completed 17 years of artistic career, of which I have been a member for the last 6 years and we have celebrated in style with a gala concert at the National Center of Social Action for Music in Caracas last Sunday.

¡Hola, espero estén bien!. Mi agrupación musical, la Coral Nacional "Simón Bolívar" de Venezuela acaba de cumplir 17 años de trayectoria artística, de los cuales yo he sido integrante los últimos 6 años y lo hemos celebrado por todo lo alto con un concierto de gala en el Centro Nacional de Acción Social por la Música en Caracas el pasado domingo.

Our director, Maestra Lourdes Sánchez has chosen a varied and exquisite repertoire for music lovers to offer an unforgettable artistic experience and our main venue known as the National Center of Social Action for Music has once again provided us with the spaces of the Simón Bolívar Hall and all the luxury of staging with the play of lights and several screens on stage.

Nuestra directora, la Maestra Lourdes Sánchez ha elegido un repertorio variado y exquisito para los amantes de la música para ofrecer una experiencia artística inolvidable y nuestra sede principal conocida como el Centro Nacional de Acción Social por la Música nos ha proporcionado nuevamente los espacios de la Sala Simón Bolívar y todo un lujo de puesta de escena con el juego de luces y varias pantallas en tarima.

I took almost no pictures this time, I was very focused on the musical part and I think I still need to recover some of the divo I usually am, but I'm still going through a great emotional recovery; yes, I enjoyed this concert like never before and I dedicated it to my parents, although none of them were physically present. Of course I always count on the company of my beloved @jhoxiris who belongs to the soprano line and in fact is the boss. She has been in the group for 9 years now, she is an eminence 😅

No tomé casi fotografías en esta ocasión, estaba muy concentrado en la parte musical y creo que aún me falta recuperar algo de lo divo que suelo ser, pero sigo pasando por una gran recuperación emocional; eso sí, disfruté este concierto como nunca y se lo dediqué a mis padres, aunque ninguno estuvo presente físicamente. Por supuesto siempre cuento con la compañía de mi amada @jhoxiris que pertenece a la fila de las sopranos y de hecho es la jefa. Ella tiene 9 años ya en la agrupación, es toda una eminencia 😅

I always sing with a lot of feeling, but there was a very special selection on this occasion of pieces with great emotional value, in fact we performed Entreat Me Not To Leave You, contemporary music by Dan Forrest, inspired by the book of Ruth and where death has great prominence in the lyrics. Our director loves the sound of the choir when we mix between sopranos, altos, tenors and basses. I usually try to place myself at the end in that position since I always sing in the first row, but the lyrics touch my heart and for the first time in all these years I placed Jhoxiris to sing next to her, having her close to me gave me the security to endure this harmony and lyric without crying.

Siempre canto con mucho sentimiento, pero hubo una selección muy especial en esta ocasión de piezas con gran valor emocional, de hecho interpretamos Entreat Me Not To Leave You, música contemporánea de Dan Forrest, inspirada en el libro de Ruth y donde la muerte tiene gran protagonismo en la letra. A nuestra directora le encanta el sonido del coro cuando nos mezclamos entre sopranos, contraltos, tenores y bajos. Generalmente busco colocarme al final en esa posición ya que siempre canto en la primera fila, pero la letra me toca el corazón y por primera vez en todos estos años ubiqué a Jhoxiris para cantar a su lado, tenerla cerca me dio la seguridad de aguantar esta armonía y lírica sin llorar.

The photos of the concert and these video clips were recorded by my brother Carlos López, a tenor from another of our professional ensembles and an aspiring member of La Coral in the upcoming auditions. It is necessary to help us capture the moments since we are singing on stage. I did the editing and shared four of my favorite moments from the concert.

Las fotos del concierto y estos fragmentos de video los grabó mi hermano Carlos López, un tenor de otra de nuestras agrupaciones profesionales y aspirante a ser parte de La Coral en las próximas audiciones. Es necesario que nos ayuden a captar los momentos ya que nosotros estamos cantando en la tarima. La edición la realicé yo y compartí cuatro de mis momentos favoritos del concierto.

The first piece in the video is We Beheld Once Again the Stars by contemporary composer Randall Stroope, a wonderful piece of music for two choirs and with a lot of power. We are such a large choir that we simply split in two. That's why you can see in the video that we are split in half. The second piece of music I have shared on Hive before, it is The Conversion of Saul, by the same composer and we simulate Paul's persecution of the early Christians and conversion to Christianity after his encounter with God. I love this music because we simulate the soldiers of the era stomping on the stage.

La prima pieza del video es We Beheld Once Again the Stars del compositor contemporáneo Randall Stroope, una maravillosa obra musical para dos coros y con mucha fuerza. Nosotros somos una coral tan grande que simplemente nos dividimos en dos. Por eso pueden observar en el video que estamos separados a la mitad. La segunda pieza musical ya la he compartido en Hive con anterioridad, se trata de The Conversion of Saul, del mismo compositor y simulamos la persecución de Pablo a los primeros cristianos y conversión al cristianismo luego de su encuentro con Dios. Amo esta música porque simulamos a los soldados de la era dando pisadas fuertes en la tarima.

The third piece of music that you can appreciate in the video is a beauty entitled Eja Mater, an adaptation of the 1980 Stabat Mater by contemporary composer Kim André Arnesen where two musicians from our sister musical group, the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra, joined us. Annette León, a founding artist of El Sistema, played the harp and Edgar Calderón, trained in our institution, played the cello. Together with them we lived a truly magical moment together with the eight-voice choral arrangement.

La tercera pieza musical que pueden apreciar en el video es una belleza titulada Eja Mater, una adaptación del Stabat Mater de 1980 de la compositora contemporánea Kim André Arnesen donde se unieron dos músicos de nuestra agrupación musical hermana, la Orquesta Sinfónica Simón Bolívar. En el arpa tocó la dama Annette León, una artista fundadora de El Sistema y en el Violoncello contamos con Edgar Calderón, formado en nuestra institución. Junto a ellos vivimos un momento realmente mágico unido al arreglo coral a ocho voces.

The video ends with O Vos Omnes Qui Transitis Per Viam, the first number of the Lamentations of Jeremiah Propheta. The strength of this piece is so dense that we close the concert with it, and I think it is also the most vocally demanding. I left the complete number at the end of the video editing, which by the way I used Shotcut to achieve it.

El video termina con O Vos Omnes Qui Transitis Per Viam, el primer número de las Lamentaciones de Jeremías Propheta. La fuerza de esta pieza es tan densa que con ella cerramos el concierto, y creo que también es la más exigente vocalmente. Dejé el número completo al final de la edición del video, que por cierto usé Shotcut para lograrlo.

Of course, since it was our anniversary, we had a whole routine of celebrations after the concert, both together as a group and each group of friends separately. The compliments were not long in coming and the results surprised us a lot, it went much better than we expected and this can only be achieved when we all manage to connect and beat to a single rhythm. I feel very proud to have the opportunity to be part of the history of choral music in Venezuela and the world, since our group has worldwide recognition.

Por supuesto que al tratarse de nuestro aniversario tuvimos toda una rutina de festejos luego del concierto tanto juntos como agrupación como cada grupo de amistades por separado. Los elogios no se hicieron esperar y los resultados nos sorprendieron mucho, salió mucho mejor de lo que esperábamos y esto solo se logra cuando todos logramos conectar y latir a un solo ritmo. Yo me siento muy orgulloso de tener la oportunidad de ser parte de la historia de la música coral en Venezuela y del mundo, ya que nuestra agrupación tiene reconocimiento mundial.
