HIVE OPEN MIC #155 (ENG/ESP) Theme "DNA": "My Father's Eyes" by Eric Clapton

Hello everybody on Hive and especially the Hive Open Mic Community! My name is Jasper and I'm writing (and singing) to you from Cape Town in South Africa! Welcome to Week 155 of the Hive Open Mic Challenge. The theme for the week is “DNA”!

One of my immediate thoughts was the lovely “Father and Son” by Cat Stevens/Yusuf Islam that many acoustic guitars players have burnt into their brains and ready to roll out at a moment’s notice – but I’m pretty sure somebody somewhere in the world will do a lovely version of that this week? (For those of you who are still wondering what to try??)

So, I thought a little bit harder and remembered Eric Clapton’s song from the 1998 Pilgrim album called “My Father’s Eyes”, which would be perfect! Although this song might not be as famous as some of Eric Clapton’s earlier songs like “Layla” and “Tears in Heaven”, according to the Wikipedia article for the song (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/My_Father%27s_Eyes_(song)), it did actually win the 1999 BMI award for “Song of the Year” as well as the 1999 Grammy for “Best Pop Vocal Performance Male”!

The Wikipedia article also describes the reason I chose the song and the tragic story behind it. I remember hearing that Eric Clapton grew up believing his grandparents were his actual parents, and that his mother (who gave birth to him very young) was merely his older sister. According to the article, Eric Clapton never got to meet his real biological father before he died in 1985 from leukaemia. The song is basically about how he wishes he had got to meet his father and look into his eyes, but that he then had a baby son of his own and could imagine seeing his father’s eyes when looking into the eyes of his baby boy… which is a beautiful thought.

Unfortunately, what is even more tragic about this is that the baby son Conor died at 4 years old in 1991 when he fell out of an apartment window, which is the same year that Eric started to write the song… and so it is a tragic lament of losing a son and never meeting his father! (“Tears in Heaven” is also about the loss of 4 year old Conor). Eric was quoted as saying about “My Father’s Eyes” - "In [the song] I tried to describe the parallel between looking in the eyes of my son, and the eyes of the father that I never met, through the chain of our blood." – which is why I think it’s the perfect choice for the theme “DNA”.

¡Hola a todos en Hive y especialmente a la comunidad Hive Open Mic! ¡Mi nombre es Jasper y les escribo (y canto) desde Ciudad del Cabo en Sudáfrica! Bienvenidos a la Semana 155 del Hive Open Mic Challenge. ¡El tema de la semana es “ADN”!

Uno de mis pensamientos inmediatos fue el encantador "Father and Son" de Cat Stevens/Yusuf Islam que muchos guitarristas acústicos han grabado a fuego en sus cerebros y están listos para lanzar en cualquier momento, pero estoy bastante seguro de que alguien en algún lugar del mundo hará una hermosa versión de eso esta semana? (Para aquellos de ustedes que todavía se preguntan qué probar?)

Entonces, pensé un poco más y recordé la canción de Eric Clapton del álbum Pilgrim de 1998 llamada "My Father's Eyes", ¡que sería perfecta! Aunque esta canción podría no ser tan famosa como algunas de las canciones anteriores de Eric Clapton como "Layla" y "Tears in Heaven", según el artículo de Wikipedia sobre la canción (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/My_Father%27s_Eyes_ (canción)), en realidad ganó el premio BMI de 1999 a la "Canción del año", así como el Grammy de 1999 a la "Mejor interpretación vocal pop masculina".
