HIVE MUSIC FESTIVAL Week 23 Second Round (ENG-ESP): "Wake Me Up" by Avicii, featuring the KAZOO!

Hello everybody on HIVE, and especially the Music Zone Community. My name is Jasper and I'm writing (and singing) to you from Cape Town in South Africa! Welcome to Week 23 / Round 2 of the Hive Music Festival!

I have only done original songs so far for the Hive Music Festival, but I have more-or-less run out of original songs (unless I start stealing the ones that my friend @clairemobey has written for our duo MobeyDick!)

So let me start wearing the “Cover Hat of Shame”. Some of you who follow me on other Hive Music Challenges like “Hive Open Mic” or “Three Tune Tuesday” may have noticed that I tend to wear a hat when I do covers, and then take it off when I do originals. I actually have this habit on stage as well, so that the audience knows when to sing along to a song they might already know well, or when to listen carefully to an original!

When I started playing music in public, one of the first places I went to was called the Barleycorn Music Club, which heavily encouraged that we try out our original songs on the audience. I even joined the organising committee to put on the little gigs for a while. So, my “cover hat of shame” joke originates from those days! Hahaha!

I don’t want to just start playing any old cover for the Hive Music Festival. You guys are my friends and deserve something special… a special effort from me. So I thought I would challenge myself like this: My main instruments are guitar and harmonicas: What if I had to ensure that every cover I do for the Hive Music Festival uses a different instrument as well, to test my creativity and ability to learn and play with different new sounds?

And so – this week is the beginning of a new series of HMF Entries called “Instrument of the Week”. Hahaha! Now I am going to look like a beginner! Which is fine! We are all friends here!

The first “Instrument of the Week” is the Kazoo! In South Africa you can pick up a plastic Kazoo for R35, which is the equivalent of just under $2.00! The learning curve is super-fast: you blow into it and nothing happens. You then go online and realise you have to hum instead… and now you’re a Kazoo-player!

I first realised that it was possible to do a nice acoustic cover of “Wake Me Up” when @yisusth requested it for the “Cover Request Challenge” I do here on HIVE on Thursdays (see bold text below). @clairemobey and I then decided we would like to do it at our most recent MobeyDick gig at The Cottage Club. We decided to add some energy and fullness to the “beatdrop” part of the song with a stompbox (makes a kick-drum sound), tambourine and both humming away on Kazoos for the melody. Two Kazoos definitely sound better than one! The audience loved singing along to the chorus and then enjoyed our good-humoured attempt at the “beatdrop”, so I think it was a very successful high-energy cover that will be a staple in our set!

Hola a todos en HIVE, y especialmente a la comunidad de Music Zone. ¡Mi nombre es Jasper y les escribo (y canto) desde Ciudad del Cabo en Sudáfrica! ¡Bienvenidos a la Semana 23 / Ronda 2 del Hive Music Festival!

Hasta ahora solo he hecho canciones originales para el Hive Music Festival, pero más o menos me he quedado sin canciones originales (¡a menos que empiece a robar las que mi amiga @clairemobey ha escrito para nuestro dúo MobeyDick!)

Así que permítanme comenzar a usar el "Sombrero de la vergüenza". Algunos de ustedes que me siguen en otros Hive Music Challenges como "Hive Open Mic" o "Three Tune Tuesday" pueden haber notado que tiendo a usar un sombrero cuando hago covers y luego me lo quito cuando hago originales.
