    TITULO INGLES.jpg

After the first week of resuming walking my balance is favorable. I did not manage to meet the goals of three kilometers in each outing for four days, but I almost managed to do it for three. I had some muscle fatigue and I was forced to slow down on the hilly sections.

Today I share with you a recommendation for when you have to walk on slopes.

The ideal when you have little training or are starting from scratch is to start on a flat surface while building muscle tone. However, sometimes the only topography available is slopes, that's my case. And that doesn't mean we're going to stop our walks. If there is a slope, then let's walk there. Of course, taking the necessary precautions to avoid injury.

One of the most frequent injuries for people who begin to walk are knee injuries, especially if we are over sixty-five years old. This can occur even if we are in the habit of walking.

To ascend, the body makes a greater effort at two levels: cardiopulmonary and muscular. Overcoming the resistance of the slope requires a greater commitment than on a flat surface. During the ascent the knee overload is not so great but the cardiopulmonary work is greater. Climbing is the ideal exercise to gain endurance. The problem is the descent.

    iMAGEN 2.jpg

During the descent the knee overload can be excessive, especially in cases where we are overweight and have weak leg muscles.

When descending, the body tends to move forward, to lose stability, and we must keep it braked, and almost all the strength to keep us firm falls mainly on the knees. That is why it is common that many people begin to feel pain in the joint after prolonged descents.

However, with a small variation in the way we descend we can minimize the effect of the force of gravity and avoid injuries.

Even if we have strong legs, it is not advisable to descend in a straight line. Doing it that way we maintain a permanent tension in the knee joint. On the other hand, if we do it in zigzag, as I show you in the video, the tension decreases, so our knees can rest in fractions of seconds, preventing overload exhaustion.

From the earliest times, long before we had any knowledge of physics or body biomechanics, humans had the intuition to zigzag the paths, thus relieving the effort required to climb and descend loads. Now we know the scientific reasons that justified doing it that way.

Don't forget. Walk zigzagging uphill to save your cardiopulmonary system and downhill to overcome the force of gravity. Your knees will thank you.

    Thanks for your time.
