In the last twenty years, attacks on freedom of expression have been increasing in Venezuela. This is a consequence of the implementation of a totalitarian state that does not admit news plurality.
In the struggle to establish communicational hegemony, the Venezuelan government has resorted to systematic persecution of the media and press workers. More than two hundred radio, print and television media have been closed down.
The legal instrument with which the regime has justified most of the recent violations to the right to inform is the "Law Against Hate, For Peaceful Coexistence and Tolerance", enacted in November 2017. The articles of the law open up the possibility of sanctioning those who can disseminate any type of information that the government considers inconvenient.
The persecution of press workers has increased due to the restrictions imposed by covid-19. Since the beginning of the pandemic, the situation of defenselessness of those who carry out the mission of informing has worsened considerably.

Most of these violations of the right to information are committed by police officers who prevent journalists from doing their jobs. Detentions occur in service stations and health centers as a means of intimidating those who disseminate information. Such is the case of the journalist Davirson Rojas, who spent 12 days in detention for sending a Tweet with figures on the pandemic, there is also the case of the journalist Carol Romero, detained and presented in handcuffs for reporting a protest about the lack of gasoline.
The most recent case of persecution is that of journalist Roland Carreño, arrested on October 26, 2020. He is accused of the crimes of carrying weapons of war and organizing violent activities.
