Every beginning of the year is a good opportunity to set new goals. And what better goal than to abandon sedentary lifestyles.

Our body is designed for movement, it is its natural condition, activity is what keeps it in good condition. However, most people prefer to leave it still, with minimal activity. This undoubtedly results in various health problems and contributes to further deterioration of all body functions.

As we age, the tendency to be sedentary is greater, the ailments of age such as joint pain, dizziness, muscle weakness, become the perfect excuse to remain immobile. We then enter a vicious circle because the less we move the more we deteriorate.

However, the reality is that even with the limitations we have we can always begin to recover our physical condition.

An excellent activity to fight sedentary lifestyles is walking, for this we only need to be able to stand up and walk. Almost everyone can do it, anywhere there is a space where you can walk, it is a matter of proposing it.

One of the issues to take into account to start is to respect the rhythm of the body, which is different for everyone. If you, for example, can only take twenty steps without getting tired and feeling exhausted, then start with that. Stay there as long as necessary. Then, when your body allows it, try to see if you can take five more steps than the last time and you will be able to measure your progress. I'm sure if you maintain the consistency of doing it about five times a week you will soon begin to notice your progress.

For those who are completely sedentary, I recommend that you start walking by setting a time limit and increase it progressively. Once you feel good and can walk for thirty or forty minutes, start setting distance goals. In both cases it is important to find a way to establish circuits to serve as a reference.

I live in a mountainous area where I have almost no flat surfaces, most of the terrain is on slopes, which forces me to make ascents and descents. As I have the habit of walking regularly I concentrate on increasing the distance, I do it on circuits of three kilometers counted from the door of my house.

Those circuits are of different intensity depending on the slope of the terrain. I choose one or the other depending on how I feel, or sometimes I alternate them to break the boredom. My big goal is to always do the walk on the higher intensity circuit and if possible increase the distance a bit.
MY medium term goal is to keep walking at least six days a week, it's not a formal training because I have no plans to participate in any competition, I'm just interested in keeping moving.

In the video you will see that I walk with a vera stick, there are two reasons for this. One is that it weighs about four hundred grams, which becomes additional resistance. Also, sometimes there are dogs running loose on the track and I've encountered some very aggressive ones. With the vera I can easily scare them away.

The invitation is for each of you to make a resolution to stop being sedentary and start walking. Every way you look at it is beneficial, it benefits the body and can serve as motivation to make publications of this type. Good luck with that.

    Thanks for your time.
