I think that all of us who, when we were kids, learned to play the cuatro, did it with a teacher or with the famous "Manual de cuatro " by Oscar Delepiani G.*, which consisted of several volumes and included many songs of different genres.
Without a doubt the first song was always "Compadre Pancho ", followed by "El Carite ", "El pajaro Guarandol " and I also remember the waltz "Nube gris ".
The manual showed us in a simple way the chords and with some little arrows it indicated the strumming that we had to do.
Apart from the fact of learning, it was also a lot of fun, besides there were so many songs and many of them were only heard on the radio.
Today I bring you these three songs in merengue rhythm, and as you will see, the chords are really very simple and the verses of the songs were the ones we all knew.
Hey compadre Pancho what's wrong with me don't you know
that the black girl from the ranch with the pulpero left me yesterday.
Oiga compadre Pancho what's wrong with me don't you know
that the little black girl from the ranch with the pulpero left me yesterday
Ay mi compadre if you see her tell her about her little son,
compadre Pancho, come back again (Bis)
Hey compadre Pancho between her and me nothing has happened
it's just that she ironed my shirt without starching it
Ay mi compadre if you see her.
"El pájaro guarandol"
(Juan Carlos Salazar)
From other lands I've come sailing on a plank
to see if I can kill the guarandol bird.
Don't kill him for me, Mr. Landlord,
because he is the guarandol of my heart.
Be careful little bird of the evil hunter
because if he shoots you, I'll die of pain.
Yesterday the boat Nueva Esparta left
went out confidently to travel the seas
and found a fish of very light forces
that breaks the hooks and bursts the guarales.
As the coast is beautiful I've been having fun
but a little canoe is following me from the outside
In the branches of the gulf we fished for it
in the deep sea where he lived
and we fished it in the boat Nueva Esparta
to present it today with joy
