    About :

Here on the homestead it’s important to be ready for everything. Something as simple as a winter snow storm could trap me for weeks. This means no grocery shopping and no getting supplies. I also am planning for long term food storage that will last for years.

I’m sure you’ve been reading those wacky headlines of food shortages or even gone to the store and seen the empty shelves for yourself.

Gubba Homestead Tip: Buy what you eat!

There’s no point in stocking up on extra foods you don’t enjoy. You're preparing to thrive when SHTF. Prepare and food storage the food you enjoy!

    Food Storage Tips

There are three important factors that go into food storage and will help with prolonging the life of your foods. It’s all about finding the right locations in your home for the right mix of temperature, light and moisture. Your foods will last longer if they are stored in a cool, dry area away from light.

Never store a 5 gallon bucket of food directly on cement; the moisture will seep into the bucket from the cement. Instead raise it off the floor with a low lying shelf.

For my long term food storage I’m primarily using Gamma lids and #10 cans in a closet in my basement.

    How To Bulk Food Storage

For myself I use a combination of Glass jars, 5 gallon buckets , 3 gallon buckets, mylar bags and tote storage containers. Make sure the buckets you’re using are food grade and I would recommend picking up some extra gamma lids for a more secure seal than those that come with it.

I just recently picked up a freeze dryer thanks to my amazing community for starting up a freeze dryer fund out of nowhere lol so awesome! I’ll be doing an unboxing video of it soon and showing off some of the food. This is another great way to store foods for longer. With freeze dried foods they last up to 25 years, retain their taste and fit great in mylar bags and glass jars.

All of these methods are great for creating food storage for your 1-30 year plan. You might be thinking you don't have the room for food storage. Get creative!

Are you using all the space in your kitchen?
Areas under your bed or couch, you could even stack buckets and put a sheet over them creating a small table or stand.

The biggest though is using the KonMari method to clean and orgainize your home.
I go over this in my other vlog here KonMari Method Basement cleaning

    Prepare More Than Food

One thing that often slips minds when preparing is the other supplies you'll need or that will come in handy if you're not able to quickly run to the store. Things such as paper towels and TP, yeah TP. Do you remember how crazy it was at stores and the critical TP shortages lol be prepared!

Do you prep yourself? Let me know what foods you like preserving for when the SHTF senario.
