Greetings Dear readers of this beautiful community @homeedders, on this occasion I want to share with you a strategy for the area of mathematics, in which we will focus on learning in a didactic way of addition according to their place value. The applied strategy is for first grade children, but it could be useful for children of any age who have not yet mastered this process.
The interest in showing you these strategies arises from my day to day life, my 7-year-old little girl is already started in the process of addition and subtraction, but she still hadn't finished understanding the order according to its place value. So it was necessary to come up with a strategy for her.
But what is adding and subtracting using place values?
We commonly know it as adding carried, or adding carrying and likewise subtracting. Which consists of adding units with units, tens with tens and so on. So I recommend reminding the little ones in the first place, where each one is. So that once the process starts you don't have to stop there.
Cartulina de color.
Marcador de tinta indeleble.
(Marcador de pizarra acrílica)
Papel Contac
Tijera.
Cuaderno u hojas blancas
Colored cardstock
Indelible ink marker. (Acrylic whiteboard marker)
Contact paper
Scissors.
Notebook or white sheets
Step #1
I recommend you Motivate the child with a brainstorm before starting learning about units, tens and hundreds.
Review with various figures the position of: units, tens and hundreds.
Step #2
Cut several 20 cm x 5 cm strips of cardboard and proceed to line them with Contac paper.
El uso del papel contac nos permite que el niño escriba sobre la cartulina y posterior a ello la podemos borrar para reutilizar con otra cantidad.
*The use of contact paper allows the child to write on the cardboard and after that we can erase it to reuse it with another quantity.
Step #3
Escribe en las Hojas blanca o cuaderno de tu pequeño aprendiz, las diversas sumas y restas a resolver.
Considera el espacio entre ellas para su comprensión y facilidad en la visualización del proceso del niño.
Write on the white sheets or notebook of your little apprentice, the various additions and subtractions to solve. Consider the space between them for understanding and ease in visualizing the child's process.
Step #4
Write the quantities to be added on the Cardboard strips, previously lined with Contac paper.
With your help, allow the child to make the first cut of the numbers (cardboard) in order to indicate the location of units, tens and hundreds.
The idea is to imagine vertical lines that form boxes. In which the first box from right to left must be the units, in the second the tens, in the third the hundreds and so on.
Take the initiative and indicate the process with an example.
Make the sum of the units, record it on the cardboard, cut and guide the sum of the units in the result.
Place the number that corresponds above in the tens.
Guide the sum of the tens, in this case the child will have 3 numbers to add.
Repite la estrategia cuantas veces sea necesario hasta que el niño puedo realizarla por sí solo.
Orienta y aporta palabras afirmativas por su logro.
Repeat the strategy as many times as necessary until the child can perform it on their own. Guide and provide affirmative words for their achievement.
It is critical that the child understand place value at this stage. As well as to achieve mastery of the correct way in which you must perform the addition and subtraction. That is, from where it starts (from Right to Left) and how it ends, since this will be the first of the operations that it will do. And it is the basis for understanding that they all follow an order for their successful execution. For example, then you must understand the correct way to perform a multiplication, and in it you must already master the addition in its place value.
In addition, mathematics and its order help us understand the processes of everyday life. It strengthens us in logical thinking, to reason in an orderly manner and to have a mind prepared for criticism by discarding opportunities and processes. In the same way, mathematics complements us in attitudes through safety in procedures, and confidence in the results obtained.
Therefore, I invite you to develop strategies according to age in a simple way with your little ones at home, or your students at school; this in order to make them more fun.
