This opinion column has been published in the newspaper Información of the province of Alicante, Spain. It is the first of a series, through which we want to give information that we believe is valuable for all artists, digital or not. They can own the promotion of their careers, avoiding censorship. There is life beyond Facebook.
"Antonio, don't suffer. We are still connected."
A few weeks ago I heard noises in the stairwell. I didn't give it any importance thinking it would be
the elevator technician and went on with my business. I had pending content to upload, a video, but
I was not going to share it on Facebook, Instagram or WhatsApp but on 3Speak. This is an
application to share only videos and receive rewards from users who see this content that runs,
works, on the Hive blockchain. Earlier I had a work conversation via Telegram Do you know
Telegram? It is a social network that allows us to make group meetings, broadcast-only channels,
calls or video calls, find all kinds of content and even send money, among many other things. On
Telegram they shared a link that took me to an art room where the artist herself, who was
exhibiting, was commenting on her works in a room to which she had invited a certain number of
people. We were spectators of the works that she had previously uploaded to Decentraland. A
platform that operates on the Ethereum blockchain.
The noises in the stairwell returned. This time several female neighbors and a certain Antonio were
participating. I know his name was Antonio because he said it on several occasions, "You call my
boss and tell him. My name is Antonio. I'm telling you that your Whatsapp message has not reached
me because there has been a world catastrophe and there are no communications. Facebook,
Whatsapp, Instagram are down. Call my boss, tell him Antonio has been here and..."
When I heard about the worldwide catastrophe I got upset but I immediately understood that the
only catastrophe was coming from a part of the Internet that depends on a company, yes, a very big
one. A few centralized applications, we could say that they were the usual ones, were down, they
did not work.
My agenda continued with Discord, another social network, where I had met some friends who
announced a "giveaway" (gifts) of some NFTs (cards / cards of all life) that were part of a new
game. No, I don't play, but the NFTs were true works of art and I didn't want to miss them. Non-
Fungible Tokens that this time were, and are in the decentralized blockchain of Cardano.
There is already a new decentralized Internet, uncensored, where the content can not be
manipulated or deleted. It is Web3.0. It is the decentralized blockchain. Artists, exhibition halls,
curators, museums, cannot leave their campaigns, promotions, careers, in the hands of social
networks such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or Whatsapp. The digital divide goes beyond
whether or not you have a connection to the Web.
