This is a short story about the adventures of a young boy in a tropical jungle. His grandfather has given him a couple of warnings that he must put into practice in order not to be in danger in this hostile environment, full of dangers everywhere.

    The red fruit

When he reached the place where he heard the noise of the monkeys, he watched in amazement as the wind gently swayed the leaves of that strange tree. It had no branches, it was only a trunk of smooth bark, some of its large leaves fell to the sides, and a curious bunch of yellow fingers seemed to sprout from its top. The monkeys were fighting among themselves for the pulp of those finger-like fruits. The boy was both curious and afraid, for his grandfather had warned him that many plants in that jungle were poisonous...

One of the things his grandfather told him to know if the fruits of the plants could be eaten or not, was to wait until the birds came to eat. If the birds ate the fruit, then he could eat it too.

He had followed this recommendation a few meters back, where he came upon a leafy bush, laden with many bright red fruits. He was about to eat one of these fruits, but stopped himself as he remembered his grandfather's words "If the birds don't feed on it, neither should you".

He noticed that there was not even a red fruit with at least one bite, or a sting made by any bird. The smooth, shiny surface of that fruit was perfect. He deduced, in his gut, that no bird had ever fed on that fruit, so neither would he...

On the other hand, on that yellow fruit plant, monkeys were feasting on that appetizing fruit of peculiar shape and bright color, so when he saw one fall to the ground, he didn't think twice and ran to take it. To his surprise, when he looked up he saw that all the monkeys were staring at him, then he remembered another recommendation from his grandfather: "If you see the monkeys, run away".

That afternoon, the jungle screamed as loudly as it had ever screamed before. Monkeys came out from everywhere to chase after the young boy, rustling the branches of the trees as they swung over them to try to catch him. Only when the boy dropped the golden fruit did the monkeys stop chasing him, picked up the fruit and returned to their place.

The boy continued to run until he returned to the camp where his grandfather was, he had narrowly escaped the monkeys. However, when he reached the camp he saw that his grandfather was lying on the ground next to his brother, both face down and foaming at the mouth. Both were holding a bright red fruit in their hands...
