Welcome to another edition of philosophy in a minute, and as you have seen in the video today we explain briefly what praemeditatio malorum is, or in other words, negative visualisation is a stoic tool that helps us to live a little bit calmer, emotionally calmer as it is about thinking or visualising that the things that happen to us could have happened much worse.

In fact, the stoics will always say: "Always expect the worst", because if it happens in the worst possible way you somehow expected it, but if it doesn't, if things happen in a pleasant way, you feel good. It is about understanding that there are things we can control and things we cannot control. For example, we may be on our way to an important meeting and a tyre goes flat on the car we were in, and we think that's catastrophic, but, if we think "it could have been worse" (that's my favourite phrase), we could have had a fatal accident, that makes us calm down emotionally and teaches us deep down to be more grateful. Because stoicism advocates not resignation, but acceptance of the things that happen to us, knowing that there are more things we cannot control than those we can control, but we must focus on those things we can control.

What is it that we can control?

Our actions, decisions, thoughts and opinions.

Negative visualisation helps us to understand this, which is why I believe it is one of the most helpful stoic practices for us as people to try to be emotionally balanced.

Nuestras acciones, decisiones, pensamientos y opiniones.
