    About :

The first time I heard this song I could not believe it was a song by Alí Primera, a Venezuelan singer-songwriter well known for his protest songs. He died in 1985 and left a wide musical legacy with songs that mainly deal with social criticism and how the most powerful tend to subjugate the weakest, even after his death his music is used for political purposes and in the end we don't know if he would agree with this, only God knows!

Returning to the subject of this song, I heard it for the first time in a choir where we had to do a song by Alí Primera, nobody wanted to do a protest song and this option came up that a fellow choral singer said he would take with his respective score for the voices. When we heard it we were all pleasantly surprised, few of us knew it.

The song would have a solo and it was given to one of my favorite singers in the choir, I will call her M, however during rehearsals M got sick for a few weeks and was unable to practice the solo for several weeks, I was filling in for her and at the same time I had to learn my alto part in the choir. It was quite a challenge!

When M was able to rejoin the choir there weren't enough rehearsals left to match her voice with the choir so I was asked to do the solo of Blanquísima Gaviota, I had a mixture of emotions but in the end I accepted because M had no problem.

We went to Coro, Falcon State to sing that song and I had to do the solo in front of a room full of people, while I was singing I got so excited that I forgot to stop for the choir to do one of their parts, I remember the face of the Choir Director with a mischievous smile and his eyes open making me a gesture that said: "Go ahead, nothing has happened", my choir mates were exceptional and knew how to follow the "arrangement" that I had made at that precise moment. Everything went as if we had planned it that way. While I was singing I heard cheers: "Bravo, bravo" and at the end the applause which was a great reward, despite my mistake everything went well.

When I got off the stage, Alí Primera's widow was there, with her eyes full of tears, taking my hands and thanking me for that song, also her brother and one of her sons congratulated me. Alí Primera wrote it for her and I'm sure she was very surprised to hear it, since all the other choirs sang protest songs.

When we left the event a big party was waiting for us, where we had a lot of fun, not to mention the experience of the fun time at the hotel, the plane ride with turbulence and then staying at the house of one of my choir singer friends for several days and visiting the Medanos de Coro, among other places.

Music has given me so many beautiful moments that I can only be grateful for - Music has no gender, age, religion, political color. It is made to be loved, to be enjoyed, to fill our lives with multiple emotions.

I hope you like this cover and the story behind this song.

¡Un gran abrazo! A big hug!
