"Sea of my hope" / "Mar de mi esperanza"

    Venezuelan Popular Music
    Cover by @esteliopadilla

    Hello my people HIVE

It is an immense pleasure for me to share on this HIVE Platform, especially in this Live Hive Music Community, one of the most beautiful songs that has left, today, Deep traditional and popular footprint in the Venezuelan people, it is "Sea of my hope". The lyrics of this song were written by the musician and composer Luís Cruz Cordero (1930 - 2014), the same author of "Happy Birthday", and the musical air, that is, the melodic line, was recreated, more or less, in the Oriental Malagueña - Venezuelan - a popular genre whose musical influence came to us from Spain, to then go through all that process of hybridity and cultural mestization as a consequence of colonization and becoming what it is today; an icon of traditional Venezuelan popular music.

"Sea of my hope" was recorded for the first time in 1983 in the rhythm of Vals Pasaje, performed by Rosa Virginia Chacín (1940 -) with the musical accompaniment of the Hugo Blanco Ensemble. The beauty of the lyrics and the vocal and interpretive quality of Chacín are evident in this first calm and calm version, however, the song did not penetrate the Venezuelan public, something that the Record Producer Team did not expect, at that time, and even the author of the lyrics, Luis Cruz. Now, why didn't a song with such beautiful lyrics reach the hearts of Venezuelans? There may be many reasons, but it is evident that for those times Venezuelan music, especially the llanera, had been making itself the way of re fritos, recomposing and repetitions with Arpa, Cuatro and Maracas that kept the Venezuelan people in a state of fatigue and exhaustion due to lack of new musical values with creative and original quality. Unlike this, Gualberto Ibarreto had been consolidating himself as a figure of the Venezuelan oriental song, placing the accent on traditional music of popular roots, however, the llanero style was not his thing, so Gualberto Ibarreto was filling that void in listening from the people. In such a way that, this first version, in Vals Pasaje, did not go far for these and other reasons. This, I repeat, does not detract from the quality of the interpretive artistic work of the Chacín, whom I admire and with whom I have shared the stage with the maestro Luis Cruz. Here I present the original version that Rosa Virginia Chacín will interpret.

In 1987, at the insistence of Luis Cruz himself, the Venezuelan oriental music singer Hernán Marín recorded "Sea of my hope" sealing the resounding success of this song. Now, it is a much more vernacular and popular traditional musical air as we all know. Immediately, the Venezuelan people made this version their own, which over the years has been renewed and consolidated as one of the most beautiful songs with which it identifies. The song tells the story of the love and love impossibility of a humble fisherman who takes refuge in the tools of daily work and in the daily routine of life, but above all, the wide and great hope of his beloved sea, "... but I leave you the hook of my dreams in the sea of my hope". In the same way, from his modus vivendi or habitus vitae, he implores Almighty God and the Virgin of the Valley to help him forget that love, "... help me wind and sail guide my course Lord, / Virgin Del Valle blessed take the helm / and when tomorrow passes through the sea of illusion, / cast the sails to the wind to forget about this love ". Definitely, it is a beautiful hopeful song in a sincere Venezuelan identity context. I must say that, on that occasion, I had the honor of recording, for the maestro Hernán Marín, all the Mandolines that are included in that beautiful Record Album "Oriente en un Cantor". Here I present the Version to which I refer in this section.

In the year 2009, Rosa Virginia Cahcín recorded another version, but this time quite similar to the one recorded by Hernán Marín. I suppose that, encouraged by Luís Cruz himself, and due to the success obtained by Hernán, La Chacín tried to vindicate himself with his audience. Here I present this second version.

"Sea of my hope" / "Mar de mi esperanza" - Cover @esteliopadilla - Live Hive Music

    Mar de mi esperanza

Me voy de aquí quizás no vuelva nunca.
Me voy de aquí tal vez no vuelva mañana,
y me llevo mi chinchorro y mi atarraya,

y me llevo mi chinchorro y mi atarraya,

    Letra: Luis Cruz Cordero
Música: del Floklore venezolano, Hernán Marín y Luís Cruz
