Un poco de historia | A little bit of history

Black Sabbath are, without a doubt, the fathers of heavy metal as we know it. Although there were precedents to the hard and distorted sound, with bands like Cream rediscovering the music, the English were the ones who ended up shaping the genre, with the low and heavy slow sound, almost taken from the English factories where they used to work before their success. Their most popular song, among all their huge classics, is undoubtedly "Paranoid", taken from the band's second album of the same name. It is almost impossible that, if you like rock, you have not heard it throughout your life. However, do you know all the curiosities that surround the song? Here are five things you might not know about Black Sabbath.

    1. The truth is that it's not entirely about paranoia ?

In the words of Geezer Butler, the band's bassist: "Basically, this song is about depression, because I really didn't know the difference between it and paranoia at the time. It's something to do with drugs. When you smoke a joint, you get totally paranoid about people, you can't relate to them. There's a mix between the paranoia that you get when you smoke pot and the depression that comes after.

2.- The theme was written in a hurry ?

Most of the 'Paranoid' was composed at the same time as the band's first album, 'Black Sabbath'. The band recorded everything in two or three days live from the studio. However, the song was a product of necessity. The band needed a filler song of about 3 minutes and Tony Iommi thought of a simple riff. Then Butler wrote the lyrics quickly. During the recording, in fact, Ozzy was reading, because he didn't know the words by heart yet. Who would have thought that a classic would come out of it ?

3.- The album wasn't going to be called 'Paranoid'.

The idea of the band was that the album would be called 'War Pigs', responding to the name of another of the songs that made up the album and which also became a classic. However, the record company did not agree and decided that it was better to change the title to 'Paranoid' as it was less offensive. However, this change did not reach the cover, where there is a man with a sword and a shield, in reference to the original title.

Nosotros tampoco.

4.- Tony Iommi recorded it with a black eye.

It seems that the night before the recording, the band got into a fight from which Iommi came out badly. We don't know how the others turned out, but their story was immortalized in the song "Fairies Wear Boots". Can you imagine the band recording this historic album while the guitarist put ice in his eye? Neither can we.
