Let's talk about autism: Each child is different and each one at his own pace, at his own rhythm is going to learn things in life. Amelie, my autistic daughter, as I said before, does not speak and therefore does not have some skills, that is to say, she does not learn things and is not skilled in something she does not practice or do.

She has a kind of syndrome or behaviour and that is that she runs away, Amelie always runs away, she doesn't stay standing next to us, she doesn't stay seated for long, if you sit her alone she gets up and if there is an open door she runs without stopping, without measuring the danger and without even knowing where she is going.

    Preventive measures in the Fugue:

Every time we go out with Amelie, we can't let go of her hand, how difficult it is to depend on only one hand, because the other hand holds her and you can't let go, because in 1 second she is already far away and you have to run a lot to reach her, and not only that, but the danger of her falling down or, even worse, being taken away by a car.

On this subject you can read the following article:

    Escapadas | Escapades:

There they talk about the subject in the case of autistic children and it was the best article I got based on my own experience, when I started to investigate the reasons for my daughter's escapades. And I realised that in my case, that is, if you have a child with ASD or a child who always escapes, it can be different. I have been applying avoidance or prevention for a long time.

At home, all the doors are locked. The front door has a wooden grill to let the ventilation in, but Amelie can't get out. The doors to the rooms are closed and the kitchen has a small one. The door to the street is always closed so that Amelie has no place to escape.

Amelie is always held by the hand in the street. When getting into the taxi or car, there are rules that we practice with her without knowing that they are safety or prevention rules. If daddy goes, he sits on one side and I sit on the other, leaving the children in the middle so that Amelie can't escape. But if I go alone with the children. My eldest daughter goes in one door, when she enters she puts a safety catch, then Amelie goes in and sits in the middle and I sit at the other end.

When we go down. We immediately start to get out and with Amelie still inside the vehicle, the person responsible for her takes her hand and never lets go. My husband and I are responsible for Amelie, as she has too much strength and speed to leave that responsibility to her older sister.

    Big steps, which look small:

In the video you will be able to observe Amelie without anyone holding her hand and you will say that it is kind of contradictory to what I write, but it is not. The first time we took Amelie to the park for her first skateboard, it was a big surprise. Her daddy and I didn't have to be there to hold on to her or to hold her hand, Amelie managed to ride her skateboard on her own and without anyone having taught her before.

Nowadays I let her walk for a short time beside me without holding her arm or hand. I let her go and she has walked with me for up to a block. She takes sometimes quick or big steps and at other times tries to run away, but I put two fingers on her shoulder and tell her seriously looking into her eyes "stop, calmly" and she stops and keeps walking beside me.

For some people it is strange and it is not a big deal that she walks next to me for a block, but it makes me and her dad very proud, because we don't know since when she didn't do it, she never stopped, not even for a second. To see her walk by herself, to see her on a skateboard, to see her ride a bike by herself, without anyone teaching her, it's a wonderful thing.

    ¿Talento o Habilidad?:

    Talent or Skill?

I think it's a Talent, she does it on her own and it's something she doesn't forget, unlike other things. She doesn't need to practice and do the same thing several times to acquire that skill, she does it on her own and even after a long time she does it again without any problem.

Each child is unique, full of talents and abilities that they acquire as they grow. We can only believe in their abilities and support them on this path.
