The character he described didn't invest it in the latest painting from the renaissance era, he instead spent it in good company.

In the next sentence, he talks about all the harm he has ever done being done to himself. Was he intentionally saying that he harmed himself by spending the way he did or was he genuinely saying that he tried to harm others and then got harmed? Because how could he a man who spent all his money on pleasing others turn to have ill intentions to want to harm another?

He talks about all his acts of intelligence and realizes he can no longer recall them.

He askes for one thing and that's that his Parting glass be filled as he leaves on a journey to the unknown or at least unmentioned.
