It's official. Barcelona has been accused a few days ago by the Prosecutor's Office for having corrupted the cleanliness of Spanish football, having been paying the vice president of the referee committee while he exercised his position for at least 17 years.

This is the worst case of sports corruption in the history of Spain, and probably one of the largest in the history of European football. Without a doubt, it looks like it will be one of the most mediatic not only because of the magnitude of the accused club, but also because of the number of years in which Spanish football was rigged.

However, it is important to clarify that not every year will be judged by the Spanish justice, but only a few. Maximum from 2016 to 2018, and according to some experts, perhaps even just a few months in 2018.

Another important point is that both UEFA and FIFA can apply the punishments they consider appropriate, so Barcelona can be punished in 3 ways. The 2 mentioned, and of course by criminal means through Spanish justice.

The unfortunate thing about this is not only the magnitude of the corruption, but also that Barcelona was a club that for years maintained a false story where they always boasted of having values and being humble. As if that were not enough, when there were referee robberies to their rivals, it was normal to read that they in Barcelona never talked about the referees, implying that doing so was an indecency and a lack of lordship on the part of their rivals.

Not only did they corrupt arbitral neutrality, but they also tried to maintain an angelic aura based on continued lying and a false story, while trying to tarnish the image of their rivals when they expressed their indignation at what were obvious arbitral robberies that happened again and again and again. Now we can understand why so many strange things happened in Barcelona's matches.

As Mourinho said in his famous press conference about the whys:

More than 10 years later, we can finally know why, and the answer is that Barcelona simply has as its modus operandi to corrupt the neutrality of the referees' committee. Many of us suspected it for years, and it is finally confirmed.

It should be noted that that famous press conference was after an arbitration robbery against Real Madrid in a Champions League semifinal. During those years, there was a conflict of interest that benefited Barcelona and that is perfectly explained on the futbolgate website, which has done an excellent job of collecting information about the scandals of this club. This link below is just one of several investigative works they have done on Barcelona's corruption. I invite you to check the rest of the website to read more.

As a curiosity, I mention that since 2015 that conflict of interest ceased to exist, and coincidentally that was the year in which Barcelona won its last Champions League, since then they have suffered humiliating defeats every year, and they are already 8 years in a row.

I also consider it important to mention that this conflict of interest in UEFA is not what is being investigated in Spain, what is being investigated is only corruption relevant to Spanish tournaments.

To read more of the main news about the complaint of the Prosecutor's Office against Barcelona, I invite you to visit the following news article from El Mundo, which has been the newspaper with the best coverage and exclusives of this entire corruption case.

Finally I have to say that the phrase "more than a club" that has always accompanied Barcelona is now free to make all kinds of jokes for eternity because this stain will never be erased.

Hopefully there can be an exemplary punishment and more important, let's hope that a cleansing and a structural change can be carried out that prevents cases like this from being repeated. Barcelona has shown that the way refereeing works in Spain is easily corruptible, therefore there must be major changes in addition to punishments.
