Welcome to Web 2.5 🌐👨🏻‍💻

The idea that we are already within the age of Web 3 is a bit farfetch'd. For one, there are so many imitators announcing new applications that are disguised as Web 3, when in reality it's the same old centralized structure. Plus the Web 2 applications are still chugging along just fine. From some angles, it looks as though the population is thoroughly enjoying having their data used and abused by these tech giants. Yet, over in the shadows lurks a few true Web 3 options, such as Hive.

What is the difference between Web 2 and 3?

Web 2 includes apps (which are really just companies) such as Facebook, Instagram, Tik Tok, Twitter, Reddit, YouTube, etc. They own your content and it can disappear in the blink of an eye. You also most likely will add a portion to the company's profit. Meanwhile, you are left out in the cold and most likely wondering why they get all of the benefits from your hard work. A select few may earn a decent income from these places and even less will earn large amounts of money. It all pales in comparison to the amount of cash that the companies are raking in on our behalf.

Web 3 looks to restructure this and offer creators and consumers the opportunity to get a fair slice of the pie. Coupled with the fact that you can finally own your own data and choose whether or not it will be visible to the world, rather than being deleted because you said something that someone didn't like.

I don't think that Hive will be the sole option for Web 3 socials, but I do imagine it becoming one of the main powerhouses in the future.

We need more users 🤼‍♂️

Right now there isn't much of a fight going on between Web 2 and 3. Web 2 still dominates, despite all of its flaws. There are a handful of people who are ready to transition to Web 3 and are already in the process of doing so, but most people still cling to their old Web 2 profiles, because that is where the party is at right now. It would be wise to prepare yourself for the likely future of these companies no longer dominating once the majority of humanity realizes how hard we are getting screwed by them.

Although going back to using your Web 2 socials and promoting your Web 3 socials on there may feel like a nuisance, it is a necessary one for the time being. There wouldn't be many ways for people to learn about Web 3 if we didn't take the time to share the information on Web 2. I won't say that you will always have to do that, but for now, it is what Web 3 needs if we want to have any chance of the world adopting this new way of socializing online.

Are you still using these Web 2 apps? Do you have friends who refuse to create a Hive account? What is your plan to convince your friends and family that scrolling aimlessly on apps, which profit from you and give little to nothing back, is not the best use of our valuable time. It certainly is not going to be easy to transition this many people to something so foreign, but I think it's totally possible.
