The fire tradition of San Corrado

An ancient tradition is repeated every 9 February, the fires of San Corrado, patron saint of the city of Molfetta. Legend has it that in the last years of his life the saint had retired to the neighboring city of Modugno and that he lived there in prayer until the end of his days and was buried in the crypt of the church of Santa Maria di Modugno.

After a time a group of Molfettesi recovered the saint's body and transported it to Molfetta. However, when they arrived at the gates of the city at night, they found the access closed as in the past it was traditional to close the gates due to a question of city security.

So the group of Molfettesi camped at the city gates and lit a fire all night, consuming what they had, that is, chickpeas and seeds, products that are consumed in this particular group of the year while for the city the inhabitants light some fires for the streets, in order to honor that group of citizens who led the body of San Corrado to the city.

Fire also has a meaning of purification in the Christian religion and on this day citizens ask for forgiveness of their sins, silently observing the flames that inevitably burn the wood placed on the streets.

Un'antica tradizione si ripete ogni 9 febbraio, i fuochi di San Corrado, santo Patrono della città di Molfetta. La leggenda narra che il santo negli ultimi anni della sua vita si fosse ritirato nella città limitrofa di Modugno e che qui visse in preghiera fino alla fine dei suoi giorni e fosse seppellito nella cripta della chiesa Santa Maria di Modugno.

Un gruppo di molfettesi a distanza di tempo recuperò la salma del santo e la trasportarono a Molfetta. Giunti però alle porte della città di notte, trovarono l'accesso chiuso in quanto in passato era tradizione chiudere i cancelli per una questione di sicurezza della città.

Così il gruppo di molfettesi si accampò alle porte della città e accesero un fuoco per tutta la notte, consumando ciò che avevano ossia ceci e sementi, prodotti che si consumano in questo gironi particolare dell'anno mentre per la città gli abitanti accendono alcuni fuochi per le strade, al fine di onorare quel gruppo di cittadini che condussero il corpo di San Corrado in città.

Il fuoco ha anche un significato di purificazione nella religione cristiana ed i questo giorno i cittadini chiedono perdono dei loro peccati, osservando in silenzio le fiamme che ardono in modo inevitabile la legna posizionata per le strade.
