    About :

On the first of April 2020, I was walking around Colonia Oblatos in Guadalajara. The government had asked people of Jalisco to shut down their businesses for 5 days on account of a virus. After that, they asked people to shut down for another 5 days. So naturally, people defied the government, going ahead and opening their businesses.

Since I recorded this video, the state government did manage to get businesses to close, so perhaps Mexicans aren't quite as rebellious as I portray in the video. And now many are open once again.

    The story of Café Moneda

Once here in Guadalajara, my friend Mr. Battle had a stall selling coffee, without a licence. One day the government inspectors came down to see whose business licence had expired, and possibly steal the merchandise of these small business owners.

Among the owners of the stalls, there was a little community... When the officials came, people would band together to hide the fact that their businesses were illegal. For example, Mr. Battle would pretend to be an employee of another stall.

People in Mexico know that they have to work, and so they're much more resistant towards government efforts to shut them down. Many Mexicans know instinctively that liberty is good.

    Muh Constitution

According to the letter of the law, Mexican governments shouldn't really have the power to tell people to shut down their businesses. That's infringing on their right to conduct commerce.

One of the ways that they get around this is to shut down the court system. That means that if an official shuts down your stall or shop, you have no recourse, even if the order or fine is blatantly outside of their powers.

    Dunbar's number

British anthropologist Robin Dunbar once suggested that humans have a limit to the amount of people they can know well. Humans are social animals, tribal animals, and so supposedly the brain has a natural limit on relationships. Based on the brain size of a human relative to other primates, the number is somewhere around 150.

Most people would agree that it's reasonable to help someone within those 150. And in certain circumstances, if your resources allow, you will probably be willing to help friends of friends - going out of your way, offering a few hours of your time, and so on.

Of course, during the virus crisis, a lot more than that was asked of us. Governments and peers asked us to change our habits for months, based on the population of our city, state, or even the entire world. That is a lot to ask, and for many, it's simply too much to ask.

    Why is this video vertical?

In the past month I've been doing a lot of Facebook Live videos with the intention of calming the fear that's present all over the world. I hope you tune in, and I hope they bring you greater peace and perspective in your life.
