    About :

    Howdy Gamers

These past 2 days I've been getting ready for some wintery gaming sessions.

Now that winter is here on the cold east coast of Scotland and the days are getting shorter its time to stay indoors until spring and dive into some games.

A few days ago I picked up Skyrim - Anniversary Edition. Its hard to believe a game that released 10 years ago is still so popular and being re-released with a 10 year anniversary edition today.

I first bought Skyrim in 2011 in the first week of its release and played through the majority of the main story on the PlayStation 3.Then when the special addition was released in late 2016 on the PlayStation 4 I bought that and mostly focused on the vampire themed Dawngaurd DLC.

Now finally in 2021 I can experience Skyrim on PC and have access to the mods and creation club content.

In the video above I have created a character called Conan(I'm not very original at coming up with names for fantasy characters)We are going to be roleplaying this character as a 2 handed sword wielding Barbarian Warrior.

    Snapshot_79.png

The Anniversary addition comes with 4 free pieces of creation club content.

    These are...

    -Survival Mode-
With this mode enabled our character has to regularly eat food and sleep. We also have to take into consideration the cold harshness of Skyrims environments. If we get hungry we get a penalty to our health and Stamina.

If we are fatigued from lack of sleep we will get a penalty to our maximum mana and stamina wont regenerate our vision also becomes blurred. Sleep is also important for levelling up, you cant increase your level and gain new perks until you rest somewhere.

Being excessively cold will reduce our health. Armours now come with a warmth rating to mitigate the cold.

    Snapshot_64.png

On top of all of this we can no longer fast travel and our maximum carry weight is half of its original value.

These changes alone make the game much more immersive and I have had more fun playing through the game this time than ever before.

    -Fishing-
A fairly simple new system which can be accessed at many of Skyrim's body's of water. We just need to grab a fishing rod and click on the bait to start fishing. We can catch many different types of fish and also haul up various vendor trash like old tankards and chairs. Its also possible to reel in useful loot.

    Snapshot_35.png

    -Rare Curios-
This adds new traveling Kajit caravan merchants that sell new crafting components one of which is a poisoned apple which we can sneak into an enemy's pocket. If we do this the enemy will eat the poisoned apple straight away, a nice addition to a sneaky rouges arsenal. I imagine many new potions can be crafted from the various new herbs and mushrooms these merchants sell.

    Snapshot_41.png
(The first Kajit caravan you are likely to find is outside the gates of Whiterun)

    Snapshot_44.png
(These vendors have many new crafting components for sale)

    -Saints and Seducers-
This is a free DLC sized quest line which starts by reading a note from one of the new Kajit merchants named Ri'saad.Ask him if he has had any trouble on the roads to begin the quest then read the note he gives you.

It involves us having to find bandit camps and eliminate the threat to the traveling merchants. This quest line offers new types of armour and weapons.

Aside from these 4 free pieces of content we can access the creation club menu from the games start menu. There are a few DLC sized quest lines in there that I'm pretty damn excited to jump into but I'm told they require a higher level character.

In the video above we start out in the Sleeping Giant in in Riverwood listening to the Age of Aggression performed by the bard Sven.

    Snapshot_34.png
(I installed a mod which makes fire look more realistic and adds some smoke to the fires, candles and torches. I would highly recommend this mod as it makes all the inns feel cosier and more atmospheric)

As the video starts we have just completed the character creation process and the escape from Helgen Keep and have made our way to Riverwood.

    (Riverwood by night)

    Snapshot_38.png
(Waterfalls near Riverwood, I have installed a mod to make water look more realistic)

I didn't want to include the intro section of the game as I am sure all us Skyrim fans have seen that many times. Instead I wanted to jump right into Conan's own unique individual Skyrim Experience.

The rules for this "Lets Roleplay" series are that I have to keep Survival mode enabled and I'm not allowed to reload an old save to make a different decision. If I have a companion die ,that's it ,that companion is gone.

I also have to think like a Barbarian Warrior would think, this means focusing on health and 2 handed weapon strength and heavy armour, with as little focus on Magic as possible. I'm also going to use these outdoor Barbarian style campsites rather than comfy in rooms :).

    Snapshot_49.png
(Campsites like these suit the RP of a barbarian warrior)

The video above covers heading into the first Dungeon Bleak Falls Barrow to retrieve the Golden Claw for the Riverwood trader and the Dragon stone for the Wizard in White run.

    Snapshot_85.png

We enlist the help of the Elven Archer Faendal in Riverwood.I thought this paring of Barbarian Warrior and Elven Archer would make for some classic High Fantasy themed adventures.

    Snapshot_67.png
(When we first meet Faendal he is heading in to the local Inn. I have installed the immersive citizens mod which makes Skyrims citizens act more life like. These screenshots were taken around 8.30pm ,the villagers are all heading to the Inn for drinks and song. Adding this mod makes Skyrim feel like an next gen game, its very cool, very immersive and I would HIGHLY recommend using it.)

(Before venturing out to Bleak Falls Barrow Conan and Faendal listen to some music)

    Snapshot_80.png
(Heading up the path towards Bleak Falls Barrow our Barbarian Warrior and Elven archer stop to admire the view of the misty mountains)
    Snapshot_84.png

    Snapshot_81.png
(I installed a mod which gives us better blood splatter textures.I feel this added level of realistic brutality suits the Barbarian Warrior)

    Snapshot_88.png
(With the bandits outside cleared we can head into the dungeon)
    Snapshot_89.png

    Snapshot_91.png
(Inside the dungeon we find a fire place to warm up by and a bed roll to rest in,survival mode makes these things much more valuable)
    Snapshot_92.png
(This frostbite spider is always a fun fight)
    Snapshot_94.png

    Snapshot_97.png
(A tomb wouldn't be a tomb without some restless undead)
    Snapshot_98.png

    Snapshot_99.png
(The Golden Claw puzzle....ah sweet nostalgia!)
    Snapshot_100.png

    Snapshot_101.png
(We just got to kill this Draugr Overload, get a sweet kill cam screenshot or 2 and loot the Dragonstone to clear this dungeon)
    Snapshot_102.png

    Snapshot_103.png

    Snapshot_104.png

After clearing Bleak Falls Barrow we head back to Whiterun and head out to kill the first Dragon.

    Snapshot_53.png
(White run stables are so pretty at night)
    Snapshot_56.png
(An improved lighting mod makes this feel more next gen, added with the smoking fire/torches mod everything looks so warm and pretty)
    Snapshot_58.png

    Snapshot_60.png

    Snapshot_62.png
(No other game does epic Dragon battles quite like Skyrim)

    Snapshot_109.png

    Snapshot_110.png

This is where our first episode ends. In the second episode we will be heading up the mountain High Hrothgar to meet with the Whitebeards.

I will try to make the videos as cinematic as possible so they are fun for you guys to watch.

Hopefully you folks will enjoy this winter themed Barbarian roleplay session of Skyrim.
    Snapshot_112.png
(At the end of this first episode of Conan's Winter Tale we leave Conan resting in Belathors general store in Whiterun. He has had quite the tiring day, a whole dungeon cleared and a Dragon slain. A Nord women sits by his side and gives him the eye....I wonder where this will lead ;) )
