For those who are not aware, this song by Ed Sheeran was a soundtrack in the blockbuster sequel
Lord of the rings (The desolation of Smaug).
The movie was centered around a dragon known as Smaug who lived on the eye of a mountain which shares land with a village. The mountain together with the land around it belonged to a kingdom of dwarves called Dale.
called Smaug.
After driving the Dwarves out of their stronghold, Smaug occupied the interior of the mountain for the next 150 years, guarding a vast hoard of treasure. He destroyed the town of Dale; the men retreated to the Long Lake in Esgaroth, where they built Lake-town of houses on stilts, surrounded by water to guard against the dragon.
This dragon had an unsatisfiable desire for gold which he stole and kept in his mountain home. Somehow the villagers never had to worry about an attack on them from Smaug.
Many had tried to get their hands on some of his treasure, but soon all that was left of them is their decaying bones.
Bard a dwarf king and a descendant of *Girion*- The last lord of Dale dared to defy Smaug. He sorted the dragon's treasure which was his by right. He managed to escape with his life but what followed was 'The desolation of Smaug'.
The Destruction of Lake-town took place when Smaug burst from the Lonely Mountain and flew over to Esgaroth to destroy the city and its people, in retaliation for the aid they gave to Thorin and Company on their quest to take back the treasure-hoard of Thrór.
This song reflects the thoughts of the villagers on seeing the dragon head towards them in flaming rage. The sky was indeed filled with fire and smoke while the song played in the background and you could feel the helplessness of the people of Esgorath.
