Let's Play "Beckon the Wellspawn" (PICO-8) - A Fun Horde Survivor Game

Beckon the Wellspawn by LokiStriker is a Horde Survivor game for PICO-8, the goal is to survive as long as possible against a horde of enemies while gaining levels and new abilities to help you fight stronger enemies.

This is one of the countless games inspired by Vampire Survivors and it's a lot of fun. It's a genre of games that's easy to play, yet offers a surprising amount of depth. Beckon the Wellspawn is no different.

In this game, you choose one of 5 characters with different abilities, and you only control your characters place on the map as they attack the hordes of enemies coming for them automatically. When you defeat enemies, you earn EXP jewels to help you reach the next level. When you reach a new level you get to choose an upgrade to your character.

The upgrades vary, and I haven't played the game enough to understand all of them, but generally, you get to obtain a new attack, increase the power of an attack, decrease the intervals between attacks, gain more HP or increase your defenses.

I like the minimalist vibes of Beckon the Wellspawn's visuals. They suit PICO-8 pretty well. I like how monsters change color as they get stronger, and I'm amazed with the number of sprites shown on the screen at much. Some people call this genre "Bullet Heaven."

In this playthrough video, you'll watch me try to different characters and survive using their different abilities. "The Apperentince" was my first character and I lost pretty quickly, though I learned a bit about the game. My next attempt was using "The Purifier" and he was much stronger and I survived long enough to fight what seemed to be the first boss in the game. I didn't survive long against it, but I appreciate the change of pace it provided.

Playing this made me itch to play more Horde Survivor games, they're really fun and it's great to watch numbers go up!!
