The Mantaro River is a long river that is located in the central region of Peru. In times of the Huancas it was called Hatunmayu (Jatunmayo) (from Quechua hatun, high and mayu, river). In the time of the Incas, they called it Wankamayu (Huancamayo). At the time of the Conquest, the Spanish would know it as Angoyacu (from Quechua anqas, blue and yacu, water; "blue water"). At the same time, it maintains a revised history in its flows.

It begins at Lake Junín or Chinchaycocha at 4,080 m, its flow being regulated by the Upamayo dam and on its way it crosses the departments of Junín (Junín, Yauli, Jauja, Concepción and Huancayo provinces), Huancavelica and Ayacucho, before re-entering the Junín department through the Satipo province where it converges with the Apurímac river to form the river However, its hydrographic basin also includes the department of Pasco. It belongs to the Amazon River basin.

Its route, in its first half is from northwest to southeast, then returns from southeast to northwest. The nearby slope has been used for the Mantaro Hydroelectric Plant

The Mantaro River gives rise to the Mantaro Valley, which is the main and widest valley of all the central Andes, being therefore the main supplier of food to the city of Lima.
