The most important thing about DEC is that it remains on it's peg. Removing the peg would break the system and shake the confidence of many who have been playing this game for a long time.
So the solution lies in creating a sustainable way to increase the value of DEC as the player base grows. At the peg value, there are only $1000 distributed in daily rewards for ranked battles. This will not be incentive enough if the player base continues to grow at a rapid pace.
By creating a burn mechanism through land or some other in-game function, players should be incentivized to "buy" DEC, therefore raising it's value and the value of rewards distributed and have that grow with the player base. It won't be easy, but that is the only way to make it sustainable for the long term.
Land seems to be the most ideal place to offer this although with many other features coming to the Splinterlands ecosystem there might be other opportunities that are not visible quite yet. There is a deadline though, as the looming end of the airdrop in July will decrease demand for DEC as it's utility will be lost. We'll see what the next 5 months bring but I'm confident the team will have a solid solution in place by then!
