Next May 9 will be the 77th anniversary of the end of World War II, the day on which the Soviet army finished taking Berlin, putting an end to the advance that fascism had begun six years earlier.

Italy, under Mussolini, had willingly bowed to the Germans and Hitler, which led to an internal popular rejection of the government that finally resulted in the creation of a Popular Resistance, led mainly by the Italian Communist Party. The Italian people, with their "brave minds" joined this guerrilla struggle that finally managed to put an end to the fascist wave that had permeated Italy.

In that struggle was born a song that soon became a banner in all the leftist fronts of the world, a song that became an anthem of the anti-fascist struggle worldwide.

Today the real origin of this song is unknown, as well as what the original lyrics are. Except for a couple of cases in which some authors made their own lyrics to record them, most of the verses remained anonymous.

Since I was a child I listened to this song, performed by famous artists such as Quilapayún or Inte-Illimani, as well as in family gatherings or by new singers in small social or political events.

For me it was a surprise that many years later, this song became trending because of a TV series.

So thinking of "brave minds", I immediately thought of all those who in Italy dared to defy the army and government of their country and at the same time the Nazi terror coming from Germany. Those who bravely sang their songs to bring peace and freedom back to their land.

The lyrics I sing here are the ones I listened to as a child, as referenced above. This is my entry for the Hive Open Mic, week 107.

El próximo 9 de mayo se cumplen 77 años del fin de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, el día en que el ejército soviético terminó de tomar Berlín, dando fin a la avanzada que el fascismo había empezado seis años antes.

Italia, bajo el mandato de Mussolini, se había plegado de buen gusto a los alemanes y a Hitler, lo que generó que internamente se desatara un rechazo popular contra el gobierno que finalmente terminó traduciéndose en la creación de una Resistencia Popular, liderada principalmente por el Partido Comunita Italiano. EL pueblo italiano, con sus "mentes valientes" se sumaron a esta lucha guerrillera que finalmente logró acabar con la ola fascista que había impregnado a Italia.

En esa lucha nació una canción que pronto se convirtió en bandera en todos los frentes de izquierda del mundo, una canción que se convirtió en un himno de la lucha antifascista a nivel mundial.

Hoy en día se desconoce el origen real de esta canción, así como cuál es la letra original. Salvo por un par de casos en los que unos autores hicieron sus propias letras para grabarlas, la mayoría de versos quedaron anónimos.

Desde que yo era niño escuchaba esa canción, interpretada por artista famosos como Quilapayún o Inte-Illimani, así como en reuniones familiares o por cantantes nóveles en pequeños actos de carácter social o político.

Para mí fue una sorpre que muchísimos años después, esta canción se pusiera de moda por una serie de televisión.

Así que pensando en "mentes valientes", pensé inmediatamente en todos aquellos que en Italia se atrevieron a desafiar al ejército y gobierno de su país y al mismo tiempo al terror nazi que llegaba desde Alemania. Aquellos que entonaron valientemente sus canciones para devolver la paz y la libertad a su tierra.

La letra que canto acá es la que yo escuchaba cuando era niño, tal como hago referencia más arriba. Es esta mi participación para el Hive Open Mic, semana 107.
