Some time ago I had the idea of making an arrangement to the song I bring today, however, as I didn't have the lyrics I had not been able to do it. But when I finally got the text, I forgot the idea of the arrangement. So several weeks have passed.
Even though the original idea didn't appeal to me, I decided to make some kind of vocal arrangement that would allow me to play with the harmony.
It is worth clarifying that this song comes from colonial times and was a work song. It is about verses that the slaves sang while turning the grinding wheel. That is the reason why all the time it alternates with a kind of moaning that corresponds to the moment of "pushing" the wheel.
The melody is repetitive because that is how they got their inspiration to improvise the verses. Originally, as is obvious, it had no accompaniment or harmony. For this last reason I allowed myself to harmonize it with different concepts. Of course, for this I had an additional difficulty, that of having only one voice (mine), so the register is limited and I could not use some chord inversions, or on the contrary, use it in occasions that I did not want to.
However, it is such a beautiful melody and accompanied by poetic lyrics that the song itself stands out enormously.
I hope you enjoy it because this is a song I love!
ni con lanza valenciana;
tírame con tus ojitos
lucerito en la mañana.Una pena y otra pena
son dos penas para mí;
tres veces por la semana;
y después volviera a verla
Domingo por la mañana.Si las aves y las brisas
fueran buenas mensajeras
con ellas siempre te enviara
mis suspiros y mis quejas.Para abajo corre el río;
para arriba corre el viento:
para donde van tus ojos
se llevan mi pensamiento.Clavelito colorado
nacido en el mes de enero,
como quieres que te olvide
si fuiste mi amor primero.Eres chiquita y bonita,
eres como yo te quiero,
pareces campanillita
hecha del mejor platero.No me tires con cuchillo
ni con lanza valenciana;
tírame con tus ojitos
lucerito en la mañana.
