Electric guitar in salsa? || ¿Guitarra eléctrica en la salsa?

Although the guitar has been part of Cuban son since the beginning of the 20th century, the electric version of this instrument is not very common in salsa music.

But this does not deny the fact that it has been present throughout history.

In the 60's, two salsa groups became very popular (one was the successor of the other), Sexteto La Playa and Sexteto La Plata (formed mainly by Puerto Ricans living in New York), which used the electric guitar to make the rhythm that usually characterizes the Cuban tres or piano, what is usually called "the montuno".

Also in Venezuela, we had a very outstanding group that used this instrument in the same way as the ones mentioned above: Sexteto Juventud.

But let's be clear, when we talk about electric guitar in Salsa, we all automatically think of Jorge Santana's guitar solo in the live version recorded by the Fania All Stars of the song "El Ratón", the emblematic song by Cheo Feliciano.

In a completely different approach, we can point out that there are many people who affirm that the music of the Mexican guitarist Carlos Santana can also be included in salsa, since the rhythms he usually interprets are guajira, chachachá and other variants that are part of the Caribbean heritage. But in his case, he was given a different label to make it more accessible to the English-speaking public.

In any case, in the eternal exchange that has always existed between Latin music and jazz, the guitar has been the protagonist on many occasions.

In Cuba, groups such as Irakere also knew how to use this instrument, giving it a great presence in several of their songs.

A similar case can be found in Venezuela, with the orchestra El Trabuco Venezolano, which recorded some cult pieces with the guitar of Leo Quintero.

Its rhythmic capacity and its possibilities as a melodic instrument, with the addition that with a good distortion it becomes a powerful sound, very used in rock for breaks and strong effects, are ideal for me to integrate it in my salsa project and to combine it with the trumpet, which also fulfills the responsibility of marking the breaks and accentuating the strong parts that an arrangement requires.

For all these reasons, the electric guitar will continue to have a future in this genre, and that is why it is part of my orchestration.

Aunque la guitarra forma parte del son cubano desde comienzos del siglo XX, la variante eléctrica de este instrumento, no es muy común en la música englobada bajo el término de salsa.

Pero eso no niega el hecho de que sí ha estado presente a lo largo de la historia.

En los años 60 se hicieron muy populares dos grupos de salsa (uno fue el sucesor del otro), Sexteto La Playa y Sexteto La Plata (conformado principalmente por puertorriqueños residenciados e Nueva York), los cuales usaban la guitarra eléctrica para hacer el ritmo que suele marcar el tres cubano o el piano, lo que suele llamarse "el montuno".

También en Venezuela tuvimos un grupo muy destacado que usaba ese instrumento de la misma manera que los antes mencionados: el Sexteto Juventud.

Pero hay que estar claros, cuando hablamos de guitarra eléctrica en la salsa, automáticamente todos pensamos en el solo de guitarra de Jorge Santana, en la versión de que grabara en vivo la agrupación Fania All Stars, de la canción "El Ratón", la emblemática canción de Cheo Feliciano.

En un enfoque muy distinto, podemos señalar que hay muchas personas que afirman que la música que hace el guitarrista mexicano Carlos Santana, también se puede englobar dentro de la salsa, ya que los ritmos que él suele interpretar son la guajira, el chachachá y otras variantes que forman parte del acervo caribeño. Pero en su caso se le adjudicó una etiqueta diferente para hacerlo más accesible al público de habla inglesa.

De cualquier manera, en ese eterno intercambio que ha existido desde siempre entre la música latina y el jazz, también la guitarra ha sido protagonista en muchas ocasiones.

Dentro de Cuba, agrupaciones como Irakere también supieron usar este instrumento, dándole una gran presencia en varios de sus temas.

Un caso similar lo tenemos en Venezuela, con la orquesta El Trabuco Venezolano, que grabó algunas piezas de culto, con la guitarra de Leo Quintero.

Su capacidad rítmica, más las posibilidades como instrumento melódico, con el agregado de que con una buena distorsión se convierte en un sonido poderoso, muy usado en el rock para cortes y efectos de fuerza, me resulta ideal para integrarla a mi proyecto salsero y combinarla con la trompeta, que también cumple con la responsabilidad de marcar los cortes y acentuar las partes fuertes que requiera un arreglo.

Por todas esas razones, la guitarra eléctrica seguirá teniendo futuro en este género y por esa razón es parte de mi orquestación.
