Today my neighbour got married here in the house and it was a simple and fine occasion. It's not what I'm used to where I come from but I actually appreciate how reserved weddings are around here in the north.

I missed out on the beginning part of the show but like I said, it was a simple ceremony so I didn't miss out on a lot. By the time I got there, the new couple were being prayed for by members of their families on either side.

There weren't so many people except for family and a few friends, just enough to fill up the living room and the verandah. The wedding proceedings are very similar to that of my culture where the groom comes with some required items to present to the bride's family.

I don't know exactly what is on their bride price list but from the items I saw, some of the presented gifts were five gallons of cooking oil, salt, seasoning, cream, fabric, duvet and a couple other things. For the bride price payment itself, I have no idea if they paid any money to the bride's family.

One thing the ceremony lacked though is the usual drama that is associated with southern weddings. As with my own wedding, there was some haggling about the bride price and the items presented but not this wedding. I think it is very unnecessary haggling prices for a human like they're some priced goat.

The couple were dressed in matching ankara outfits and the guests were also adorned in beautiful prints of ankara. The tailor in me felt like she was in some kind of ankara haven.

There was a variety of food available, my husband and I stuck with good ol' Nigerian jollof rice topped with coleslaw and fried chicken. We even got an extra serving after the ceremony thanks to neigbour privilege.

I really was stunned by how lowkey these ceremonies are around here. It seems they're generally not flashy and shy away from all things elaborate. Another surprising thing is the parents of the bride were not present while the other family members blessed the couple, I will find out the reason behind that.

This is only the traditional ceremony though, I hear there is going to be a white wedding some time later. My husband thinks that would be a big occasion. We'll see.

I don't have pictures but in the video is our beautiful bride in her lovely dress. That's me and my husband behind her. Henceforth, she'll be called 'new wife' in the local dialect. Hopefully the new wife tag on me will wear off now since she's the most recent wife.

In all, it was a fun day.
