Chess is a strategic sport played between two people, it has defined rules and the main objective is to checkmate the opposing king. This could be considered as the most elementary notions of the game, but there are other elements to take into account related to the players involved in the contest. The science sport is well known for its ability to integrate all types of public, being one of the cheapest disciplines to practice; it is precisely this character of inclusion that stands out. In the last few years, the practice of adapted chess or chess for visually impaired people, a variant of conventional chess that has its own international federation and world competition cycle, has become more and more popular.

In this post we will analyze in detail what is adapted chess and how a visually impaired person can play a game.

The first thing to keep in mind is that the rules of the game remain the same, the movement of the pieces does not change nor the strategic fundamentals. Chess for the visually impaired is mainly characterized by the adaptations present in the chessboard. A braille board has a relief or elevation on the black squares, so that the chess player can distinguish between light and dark squares by touch. Likewise, each square of the board is perforated in the center so that the pieces can be fitted properly, this is very important as it ensures that the pieces do not fall when the athlete is touching the pieces. As for the pieces there is also a slight modification: the black pieces have on the top a metallic, wooden or plastic point with a certain roughness which helps the player to distinguish the color of the pieces.

As well as the dashboard presents these changes, the clock also has a small variation. The adapted clocks have an interface in which you can connect a hearing aid and thus consult your own time as well as that of your opponent when you wish. With these material conditions a visually impaired chess player can perfectly develop an effective game, but many will probably still have doubts about how it works, how to make a move without "seeing" it. It is precisely the magic of chess, it is not necessary to physically see the pieces to know where they are located, all the action is happening in the mind, to understand this we must review what is known as "The algebraic notation".

A chess game is a sequence of moves, moves that are bounded in a geometric portion of a defined space. Each game can be recorded so that in the future it can be reproduced and the strategic maneuvers that each player carried out can be relived. The system that "records" the moves is called the algebraic notation. As in a coordinate axis, each move represents a point in that geometric space, concretely speaking, the columns of a board are defined by letters (a,b,c,d,e,f,g,h) and the rows by numbers (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8), a square is then the interruption of a row and a column, for example:

The square marked in red is known as "e4", file e row 4.For the pieces we use their initial in capital letters: Knight = C, Queen = D King = R, etc. So if I want to move the knight to the h7 square I would write: Ch7, that is, first the initial of the piece followed by the square where it will be played. As for the pawns, only the destination square is named. With this language it is possible to carry out a game without the need to see it, it is as if we were reading a map in our mind, it is not necessary to physically walk the paths, knowing the routes we can already get an idea of how to travel them. I talk a little more about this in the video. Here you can see an example of a game that has been recorded:

    Match between visually impaired people

With the adaptations in the board and the notation system the players can play a game. It is very common that each player uses his own board, so the game will be developing simultaneously in both sets, therefore it is very important the presence of the referee who ensures that both positions are identical. The mechanics of the game is that one player announces his move out loud, he moves it on his board, the other player hears and replicates the move on his board, both players write down the move in braille with an audio recorder and so on until the end of the match.

    Clasificaciones b1-b2-b3

    Classifications b1-b2-b3

Depending on the degree of visual impairment the athlete can be B1, B2 or B3. B1 corresponds to a totally blind person, B2 is a person who can see but with difficulty and B3 like B2 has vision problems but milder. In international competitions very often b11 players face B2, B3 players face B1 etc. It is an open debate, some propose the separation of the categories, others prefer to keep them, in short it is a very complex issue. In the video I address this issue more extensively.

The IBCA (International Braille Chess Association

As I mentioned at the beginning, the practice of chess for visually impaired people has become popular in the last decade, more and more players are joining this movement. Just as conventional chess has FIDE, adapted chess has IBCA, an international association that is in charge of regulating tournaments worldwide related to visual chess. Every year different individual and team tournaments are held, even every 4 years the paralympics of chess for the blind and visually impaired are held.

The training of a visually impaired athlete

This may be the section in which there are perhaps the greatest weaknesses. There is no method as such that dominates worldwide, certainly the way to train a chess player varies greatly depending on the person, in essence the training includes the analysis of games, problem solving, study of chess theory in short, a fairly large number of elements. For the disabled chess player, access to these resources is somewhat limited, although it is true that the training materials have been adapting quite well. For example, many of the traditional chess books have been converted to audio format, which facilitates the study, and screen readers also complement quite well in this regard. The game platforms have also taken into account the presence of people with disabilities, tornelo, lichess, chess.com to mention a few, the representatives of the online chess games have taken very seriously the implementation of a more accessible technology that allows the user with disabilities to play online games in the best possible way.

This is the end of today's post, this is a topic that I am very passionate about and I have been actively involved for several years in the world of chess competitions for people with visual impairment, it is an honor for me to share this knowledge and experiences with the community of @fulldeportes, I hope you like it and that we can establish a constructive communication on this beautiful topic.
