Yes, my Barbie review!

I remember when I had my first Barbie. I was 4 years old, and her name was Peach Barbie, she was a cute Barbie with a beautiful pink dress. I had other Barbies, but not many. The last one I remember was a Camper Barbie, I was about 10 or 11 years old when my mom gave it to me. I remember my uncle telling me that I was too old to keep playing with Barbies, I didn't stop. I didn't stop, I played with Barbies until I was 15 years old, secretly, because I was too old to play with Barbies. Furthermore, I loved Barbie Camping, I had a lot of accessories, including a sleeping suit and boots. I also had lots of Barbie stuff, including the monthly magazines that were my fun. I even had posters with pictures of the Barbies that came in the centerfold of the magazines.

And yes, I was an average little girl who loved Barbie. I also grew up hearing that she looked like a Barbie because she was so skinny, and I knew people who were called “Barbie” because they looked like models (I guess a lot of models were called that too). I don't want to take men away from this conversation, rather I'm trying to get them to integrate and understand that many girls' lives, or the first contact we had, was with Barbies. And obviously, we rushed out to see the movie directed by one of my favorite directors, Greta Gerwig.

! [Spanish] Recuerdo cuando tuve mi primera Barbie. Tenía 4 años y se llamaba Barbie Melocotón, era una linda Barbie con un vestido rosado hermoso. Tuve otras Barbies, pero no fueron muchas. La última que recuerdo era una Barbie Campista, yo tenía como 10 u 11 años cuando mi mamá me la regaló, recuerdo bien a mi tío diciéndome que ya estaba como grande para seguir jugando con Barbies. Yo no le paré. Jugué con Barbies hasta los 15 años, a escondidas, porque ya estaba grande para jugar con barbies. Amaba a Barbie Camping, tenía muchos accesorios, incluyendo un sleeping y botas. También tuve muchas cosas de Barbie, incluyendo las revistas mensuales que eran mi diversión. Incluso tenía afiches con fotos de las Barbies que venían en la página central de las revistas.

Y sí, fui una niña promedio que amaba a Barbie. También crecí escuchando que parecía una Barbie porque era muy delgadita, y conocía a gente a las que le decían “Barbie” porque parecían modelos (supongo que a muchas modelos también las llamaban igual). No quiero apartar a los hombres de esta conversación, más bien intento que se integren y que entiendan que las vidas de muchas niñas, o el primer contacto que tuvimos fue con Barbies. Y obviamente, salimos corriendo a ver la película dirigida por una de mis directoras favoritas, Greta Gerwig.

I enjoyed this satire in which Margot Robbie herself uses her proportional and natural beauty in favor of allowing teasing around her and self-proclaiming herself Barbie. Stereotypical (you know, thin, tall, blonde and blue-eyed), the perfect Barbie who starts to feel the ravages of starting to feel normal. And, on the other hand, Ken, not least, realizes he can be a man upon leaving Barbieland, a world controlled solely by women, to the outside world. He reads and studies about patriarchy and what a man should be like. Which he integrates into Barbieland becoming hilariously crazy.

We have a fun plot, a social critique that points out the consumerism and social structure we grew up in, setting the standard for a Barbie, who could be anything you wanted to be, but mostly, thin. Contrary to what everyone thinks, it is not an anti-men movie, it is a movie to teach society how the world is built and how it has been designed so that women have no place in it. Sure, we agree that the world is changing, reluctantly, but it is changing. But we still have a lot of things to change, and a lot of places we want to get into and if some of us get in, stay in.

It doesn't mistreat anyone, but it does point out, from a female point of view, everything we went through. It puts Barbie as a character between the two worlds who see how crazy it all gets and how the Barbies of Barbieland are affected and basically lose their voice. It doesn't seek to destroy the Barbie model, but to acknowledge all that they have done wrong. As the girls we once were, we grew up thinking that not only could we be whatever we wanted to be, but that despite everything, we MUST and are obligated to be.

[Spanish] Disfruté de la película, mucho, es una sátira en la que la propia Margot Robbie utiliza su proporcional y natural belleza en pro de permitir burlas a su alrededor y autoproclamándose Barbie, estereotípica (ya saben, delgada, alta, rubia y ojos azules), la Barbie perfecta que empieza a sentir los estragos de empezar a sentirse normal. Y, por otro lado, Ken, no menos importante, quien al salir de Barbieland, un mundo controlado únicamente por mujeres, al mundo exterior, se da cuenta de que puede ser un hombre y lee y “estudia” acerca del patriarcado y como debe ser un hombre. Lo cual integra en Barbieland volviéndose una locura hilarante.

Tenemos una trama divertida, una crítica social que señala el consumo y la estructura social en el que crecimos, poniendo como estándar a una Barbie, que podía serlo que quisierasser, pero principalmente, delgada. Contrario a lo que todos creen, no es una película antihombres, es una película para enseñarle a la sociedad como está construido el mundo y como ha sido diseñado para que las mujeres no tengamos cabida en él. Claro, estamos de acuerdo que el mundo está cambiando, a regañadientes, pero está cambiando. Pero seguimos teniendo muchas cosas que cambiar, y muchos lugares en los que queremos entrar y si algunas entramos, permanecer.

No maltrata a nadie, pero sí señala, desde un punto de vista femenino, todo lo que pasamos, y pone a Barbie como un personaje entre los dos mundos que ve qué loco se vuelve todo y como las Barbies de Barbieland se ven afectadas y básicamente pierden su voz. No busca destruir el modelo de Barbie, sino reconocer todo lo que han hecho mal, y como niñas que en algún momento fuimos, crecimos pensando que no solo podíamos ser lo que quisiéramos ser, sino que a pesar de todo, DEBEMOS y estamos obligadas a serlo.

I would really love to go deeper into the subject, because for each one of us it was different, and each person who saw the film had a different reaction. In my case, I was marked by America Ferrara's monologue, who explained how it was to be a woman and how difficult it was. Truly, that moment not only enchanted me, but also moved me to the point of crying in the theater (uncomfortable...).

Want to know the technical facts? It will win the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture Musical or Comedy. Robbie, Gosling and Ferrara will be nominated for every award. It will win and be nominated for multiple technical awards for production, art, and editing. The film was shot entirely in studios, no special effects were used (but visual effects were). Greta will compete directly with Nolan, but that's another story. Coming soon my review of Oppenheimer (Which I haven't seen yet, excuse me world!).

! [Spanish] De verdad que me encantaría profundizar más en el tema, porque para cada uno fue diferente, y cada persona que vio la película tuvo una reacción diferente. En mi caso, quedé marcada con el monólogo de América Ferrara, quién explicó cómo era ser una mujer y lo difícil que era. De verdad, que ese momento no solo me encantó, sino que me conmovió al punto de llorar en el cine (incómodo...).

¿Quieren saber datos técnicos? Se ganará el Golden Globe por mejor película musical o comedia. Robbie, Gosling y Ferrara estarán nominados a todos los premios. Ganará y será nominada a múltiples premios técnicos por producción, arte y montaje. La película fue grabada en su totalidad en estudios, no se utilizaron efectos especiales (pero sí efectos visuales). Greta competirá directamente con Nolan, pero esa es otra historia. Ya pronto mi reseña de Openheimmer (¡Que aún no he visto, discúlpame mundo!).

I know that many are fed up with Barbie, because the publicity has been fierce. But we have to be quite reasonable and be clear that pink dominated the world during the days of the premiere. The madness experienced in the world for the Barbie premiere, I can only compare it to a soccer World Cup or Christmas. Because the fact that stores, malls, businesses, social networks and many, many more things were decorated and animated by Barbie stuff is something that we can not overlook, and it is an event that I will remember all my life. I guess that's how my mom felt when she went to the Star Wars premiere. That's why I also wanted to make a video of me going to the movies to remember this event.

I highly recommend you to see it, but with an open mind, leaving your prejudices out of the theater. This way you will enjoy a very funny movie. It's not a movie for kids, but it is for teenagers, that's why we took Alejandro, who at 12 years old spent the whole movie laughing at Ryan Gosling's wonderful character. I came away with many more inner reflections, but I keep those to myself because they are private.

Sé que muchos están hartos de Barbie, porque la publicidad ha sido feroz. Pero hay que ser bastante razonables y estar claros de que el rosa dominó el mundo durante los días de estreno. La locura vivida en el mundo por el estreno de Barbie solo puedo compararla con un mundial de fútbol o con Navidad, porque el hecho de que tiendas, centros comerciales, negocios, redes sociales y muchísimas cosas más estuvieran decoradas y animadas por cosas de Barbie es algo que no podemos pasar por alto y es un evento que recordaré toda mi vida. Supongo que así se sintió mi mamá cuando fue al estreno de Star Wars. Es por eso que también quise hacer un video de mi ida al cine para recordar este evento.

Yo les recomiendo mucho que la vean, pero con lamente abierta, dejando los prejuicios fuera de la sala. Así disfrutarán de una película bastante divertida. No es una película para niños, pero sí para adolescentes, por eso nos llevamos a Alejandro, que con 12 años pasó toda la película riéndose del maravilloso personaje de Ryan Gosling. Yo salí con muchas más reflexiones interiores, pero esas me las guardo para mí porque son privadas.

I grew up, and ironically, I hated Barbie, pink and everything feminine that existed. I was against having to be a Barbie to be liked by someone, to have a boyfriend and all that nonsense that I went through for a long time. Because being a woman and being feminine, was tied to being weak, and I didn't want to be seen as weak. I never wanted it, and I still don't want it. However, after some years, I managed to commune with my femininity, to love pink. To know that being feminine, wearing heels, looking good, smelling good, having a manicure and doing girly things, has absolutely nothing to do with whether you are weak or not. It took me years to understand that, but better late than never. And here we are, doing everything America's very own monologue in the movie dictates, being EVERYTHING WE SHOULD BE. But that's how strong we are that we made it, and even wearing pink.

Thank you, Barbie, and thank you, Greta, for making this movie.

! [Spanish] Crecí, e irónicamente, detestaba a Barbie, el rosado y todo lo femenino que existiera. Estaba en contra de tener que ser “una Barbie” para agradarle a alguien, para tener novio y toda esa tontería por la que pasé durante mucho tiempo, porque ser mujer y ser femenina, estaba ligado a ser débil y yo no quería que me vieran débil. Nunca lo quise, y aún no lo quiero. Sin embargo, después de mucho, logré comulgar con mi feminidad, amar el rosa, saber qué ser femenina, usar tacones, vernos bien, oler bien, tener una manicura y hacer cosas de mujeres, no tiene absolutamente nada que ver con que si eres débil o no. Me costó años entenderlo, pero más bale tarde que nunca. Y aquí estamos, haciendo todo lo que dicta el mismísimo monólogo de América en la película, siendo TODO LO QUE DEBEMOS SER. Pero así de fuerte somos que lo logramos, y aun vistiendo de rosa.
