    About :

After our first destination didn't suit our wants, hitting the road and winging it was just what we needed. To top it off, our last choice was the best of them all. Sherman Reservoir SRA(State Recreation Area) is beautiful, plenty large and offers any type of camping you can imagine.

(Courtesy of the Gaia GPS mobile app, which I use to track all my off-road adventures. The green line is where we boated that day, which was 31.24 miles at 4mph.)

The lake is zippered with valleys all around creating peninsulas, with different camping options on each one. They even have large tents on platforms for those traveling, but don't want to set one up or don't have one. These are all primitive sites that cost $15 a night.

On the Northwest side right next to the dam is a marina, camp ground with all the amenities, including electrical hookups and even a permanent trailer park. If you like crowds and electricity, this is for you.

The first peninsula we checked out was exclusively for big rigs like ours. Each parking spot was about 70-80 feet long with a picnic table and fire ring. They could easy accommodate a semi in every spot. A couple of the spots had permanent tents set up as well.

From here we could see more options, including a boat launch on other peninsulas, so we went exploring, because there was no access to water on this one. Each peninsula offered something different, from better views on one to direct access to the water on others and both.

We chose one with a boat launch of course and even though it was Friday, the campground here was completely empty. It was a no-brainer that we grabbed a spot and hung out for the rest of our outing.

Like with Merritt Reservoir, from what we could see from one area wasn't even close to what was available. There were three main huge areas of open water and dozens of little spike-like coves where you could disappear and hangout with total privacy.

Since the Sandhills come right up to the water, erosion has caused many to collapse. This leaves small shear sand faces that swallows have made into their homes. As we'd boat by they were constantly flowing in and out of their dwellings. The bugs weren't bad here either, so I'm sure these little guys had something to do with that.

We spent the whole day out on the water, finding one of those private coves where we just chilled, napped and I even hiked over almost two hours. The reservoir must be a cattle watering hole, because there were cattle trails all over the place.

As you can see on the map we circled the whole place and almost went into every cove we passed. The only ones we skipped were those where we could see the end.

All in all this State Recreation Area was everything we were looking for and we'll definitely be going back. We saw around 3 or 4 boat launches while out on the water, so we'll probably check out a different peninsula next time.
