Today is April 30th a very special day because we celebrate the International Jazz Day! A musical genre that has been gaining an increasingly important role throughout my career as a musician.

While studying instrumental performance at university, I had to learn to listen and play various genres, such as joropo, onda nueva, merengue and many more. However, jazz is the genre that is most emphasized in my career, as it is considered one of the most difficult to play.

In every semester, my teacher included 10 to 20 exercises related to jazz in the syllabus, and throughout my career we delved deeper and deeper into the genre. This made me learn to listen to it and feel more and more comfortable with it.

To graduate as a musician from UNEARTE, I had to perform a graduation recital in which at least two of the repertoire pieces had to be jazz. For my recital, I chose one of the most commercial jazz standards, "TAKE 5" by Dave Brubeck, one of the first jazz pieces that I liked and listened to a lot in several movies.

The curious thing about "TAKE 5" is that it is a swing in 5/4, an irregular time signature. Most music is written in binary figures, but "TAKE 5" is a very popular piece written in 5, hence its name.

To celebrate this year's International Jazz Day, I want to share with you a fragment of my graduation recital, where I play "TAKE 5" together with my friend and excellent pianist Jesús Milano, whom I had the pleasure of meeting at university and playing with him in my recital.

The video was recorded by Enrique Salgado and the audio was handled by Brayan Zapata, both excellent people and professionals who helped me make my graduation recital possible.

Hoy es 30 de abril y es un día muy especial porque se celebra el ¡Día Internacional del Jazz! Un género musical que ha ido adquiriendo un papel cada vez más importante a lo largo de mi carrera como músico.

Mientras estudiaba la carrera de ejecución instrumental en la universidad, tuve que aprender a escuchar y tocar varios géneros, como el joropo, la onda nueva, el merengue y muchos otros más. Sin embargo, el jazz es el género en el que se hace más hincapié en la carrera, ya que se considera uno de los más difíciles de tocar.

En todos los semestres, mi maestro incluía de 10 a 20 ejercicios relacionados con el jazz en el pénsum, y durante toda la carrera profundizamos cada vez más en el género. Esto me hizo aprender a escucharlo y sentirme cada vez más cómodo con él.

Para graduarme como músico en UNEARTE, tuve que hacer un recital de grado en el que al menos dos de los temas del repertorio debían ser jazz. Para mi recital, elegí uno de los estándares de jazz más comerciales, "TAKE 5" de Dave Brubeck, uno de los primeros temas de jazz que me gustaron y que escuché mucho en varias películas.

Lo curioso de "TAKE 5" es que es un swing en 5/4, una medida de compás irregular. La mayoría de la música está escrita con cifras binarias, pero "TAKE 5" es un tema muy popular escrito en 5, de ahí su nombre.

Para celebrar el Día Internacional del Jazz de este año, quiero compartir con ustedes un fragmento de mi recital de grado, donde toco "TAKE 5" junto a mi amigo y excelente pianista Jesús Milano, a quien tuve el placer de conocer en la universidad y tocar junto a él en mi recital.
