    En San Petersburgo se lleva a cabo uno de los torneos de ajedrez más importantes en este deporte, para 1889 Enmanuel Lasker ostentaba el título mundial y saldría como campeón de este torneo ese año pero antes de coronarse como ganador tuvo que rebasar la ventaja que tenía por encima de él el Americano Harry Pillsbury quien era el líder de la competición, le tocó enfrentarse a Lasker y necesitaba ganar para poder retenersu ventaja pero esto no sucedió debido a que perdería contra el campeón, vean la posición crucial
