Lava at Pacaya Volcano in Guatemala (Drone view)

Pacaya volcano is one of the most active volcanoes in Guatemala.

It has an altitude of 2,552 m, it is a easy day hike.

The volcano was granted national park status in 2001.

The current active phase of the Pacaya volcano began in 1965. To the delight of travelers, the volcano continues to spew out ash and lava from its top. The activity can vary from gas and vapor emissions to large rock and lava explosions. Night is the best time to observe the eruptions, as you can see the orange source of fire from the top of the volcano.

Pacaya is one of the most accessible volcanoes in Central America. Although it can be visited independently, it is recommended to go with a guide. Most tour operators are based in La Antigua, but it is possible to visit Pacaya as a tour from Guatemala City.

Pacaya´s trail is 3.7 km long, it climbs steadily through farms and a forest before reaching the summit covered in ancient lava flows.

Once you reach the summit you will be rewarded with a face-to-face view of the volcano's fumaroles, which may be erupting ash, rock or lava.

The summit can be windy and the fumaroles emit sulfuric vapors, which should be avoided if possible.
