Today I want to take you to a truly enchanting place: Las Terrazas, located in the Sierra del Rosario, in the province of Pinar del Río, here in Cuba. This paradise is located at kilometer 52 1/2 of the Havana-Pinar del Rio highway, and occupies some 5,000 hectares. Since 1985 it was declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO, and in 2020 it received the title of Paisaje Cultural Las Terrazas, National Monument.
It is a project that was born in 1968 with the aim of linking the existing scattered rural communities with their environment, making a change of economic activity in the area and anchoring it in the service sector, especially in sustainable eco-tourism.

Prior to 1968, this region had suffered from irrational land use due to coffee plantation and mining exploitation, which had devastated its biosphere. However, with the passage of time and care, the nature of this region has recovered its former splendor, giving us an exuberant vegetation that fills our eyes with green, blue and the vivid colors of the flowers. Visiting this place is a rewarding experience for the senses.

Hoy quiero llevarles a un lugar realmente encantador: Las Terrazas, situado en la Sierra del Rosario, en la provincia de Pinar del Río, aquí en Cuba. Este paraíso se encuentra en el kilómetro 52 1/2 de la carretera La Habana-Pinar del Río, y ocupa unas 5.000 hectáreas. Desde 1985 fue declarado Reserva de la Biosfera por la UNESCO, y en 2020 recibió el título de Paisaje Cultural Las Terrazas, Monumento Nacional.
Se trata de un proyecto que nació en 1968 con el objetivo de vincular a las dispersas comunidades rurales existentes con su entorno, realizando un cambio de actividad económica en la zona y anclándola en el sector servicios, especialmente en el turismo ecológico sostenible.

Antes de 1968, esta región había sufrido un uso irracional de la tierra debido a la plantación de café y a la explotación minera, que habían devastado su biosfera. Sin embargo, con el paso de los años y el cuidado, la naturaleza de esta región ha recuperado su antiguo esplendor, regalándonos una exuberante vegetación que llena nuestros ojos de verde, azul y los vivos colores de las flores. Visitar este lugar es una experiencia gratificante para los sentidos.

Among the small houses is that of the famous Cuban singer Polo Montañés, now deceased, who with his short but influential career contributed, like many other artists, to the renown of this Caribbean island full of art. His house is preserved as a museum where his trophies, platinum and gold records, as well as some personal objects are exhibited. What impressed me most about this little house, where his songs are incessantly listened to, was that every window offers a view of the lake and an immediate connection with the infinite nature, an unequaled privilege.

Entre las casitas se encuentra la del famoso cantante cubano Polo Montañés, ya fallecido, que con su corta pero influyente carrera contribuyó, como muchos otros artistas, al renombre de esta isla caribeña llena de arte. Su casa se conserva como museo donde se exponen sus trofeos, discos de platino y oro, así como algunos objetos personales. Lo que más me impresionó de esta casita, donde se escuchan incesantemente sus canciones, fue que cada ventana ofrece una vista del lago y una conexión inmediata con la naturaleza infinita, un privilegio inigualable.

We toured the community until we arrived at Café María, where we were able to taste a delicious Cuban coffee. From the balcony of this beautiful corner you can appreciate breathtaking views of the entire community, a perfect place to rest and relax while the youngest ones venture into the exciting Canopy, one of the most intrepid experiences of the resort.

Recorrimos la comunidad hasta llegar al Café María, donde pudimos degustar un delicioso café cubano. Desde el balcón de este bello rincón se pueden apreciar unas impresionantes vistas de toda la comunidad, un lugar perfecto para descansar y relajarse mientras los más jóvenes se aventuran en el emocionante Canopy, una de las experiencias más intrépidas del complejo.

The Canopy is an activity full of excitement and adrenaline that consists of flying through the air more than 30 meters high, through steel cables attached at different points. It consists of 3 stretches of 2 kilometers in total. The necessary protective equipment is provided and it is totally safe. Although unfortunately I was unable to participate due to a shoulder injury that prevents me from exerting myself, my son lived the experience first hand. I would have loved to accompany him, but on this occasion it was not possible. However, I was waiting for him at the place where this exciting adventure ends, right next to the lake in the center of the community.

El Canopy es una actividad llena de emoción y adrenalina que consiste en volar por el aire a más de 30 metros de altura, a través de cables de acero sujetos en diferentes puntos. Consta de 3 tramos de 2 kilómetros en total. Se proporciona el equipo de protección necesario y es totalmente seguro. Aunque desgraciadamente no pude participar debido a una lesión en el hombro que me impide realizar esfuerzos, mi hijo vivió la experiencia en primera persona. Me hubiera encantado acompañarle, pero en esta ocasión no fue posible. Sin embargo, le estaba esperando en el lugar donde termina esta emocionante aventura, justo al lado del lago del centro de la comunidad.

After strolling through the community, we headed to the San Juan River, one of the highlights of the tour, especially for its refreshing waters and beautiful surroundings full of vegetation. To get to the river, we crossed an elevated bridge that took us to the shore, where families found their space to spend the rest of the day. There was no internet connection there, so I didn't see anyone around me looking at my cell phone. I was delighted to feel that everyone was only concerned with enjoying the moment.

Tras pasear por la comunidad, nos dirigimos al río San Juan, uno de los puntos culminantes del recorrido, sobre todo por sus refrescantes aguas y su bello entorno lleno de vegetación. Para llegar al río, cruzamos un puente elevado que nos llevó hasta la orilla, donde las familias encontraron su espacio para pasar el resto del día. Allí no había conexión a Internet, así que no vi a nadie a mi alrededor mirando el móvil. Me encantó sentir que todo el mundo sólo se preocupaba de disfrutar del momento.
