“Trust the experts.” “Believe the science.”
People who say this don’t fully understand how science works, or that experts are fallible and can be laughably wrong, or that sometimes great discoveries come from uncredentialed hobbyists.
To maintain an environment conducive to the pursuit of truth and discovery, freedom of thought and speech must be defended.
What has happened historically when scientific “consensus” excluded dissenting opinions, or even punished the experts who held them, has often been disastrous. And the same thing is happening again now.
