What’s up, @threespeak and @hiveio! I’ll be honestly, I’m feeling some numbness from the last two weeks living in the eye of the storm in Minneapolis. We’re just now having a couple of nights without military helicopters flying around our house. I decided to do a simpler post tonight. Less political, less about people, and more about what’s being cultivated, rather than what’s being burned down and destroyed. This is a virtual tour of our garden in NE Minneapolis.

When COVID-19 was the only thing we had to worry about, it felt like the world was ending. Mind you, I’m not referring to the news […although, that’s clearly what perpetuated it]. Just never seeing a single friend, all our usual haunts closed indefinitely […or forever]. @vermillionfox and I decided to start planting seeds in our basement. I had a 150 full spectrum LED that wasn’t being used, so we suspended it from the ceiling and that was it!

After a few weeks, we had early vegetables sprouting in small compostable soil cups. It’s June now, so when you’re seeing these photos, you’re probably think we started late. I see @lukestokes’ vegetable sculpture on Twitter and I’m low key jealous, but we can’t do that here in Minnesota. Our last night of frost wasn’t until mid-May! We’re set now, though. I spent over $2,000 on four new raised bed, a ton [literally] of soil and compost, and the fencing, stakes. If any of you are wondering where all my @hiveio rewards are going…I’m eating them.

We’re seeing most of the vegetables take hold and thrive now. Carrots, green onions, kale, lettuce, zucchini, squash, watermelon, peas, tomatoes, and cucumbers. We also have sunflowers and strawberries at the edge of our property. This is also the first year that we’ve composted and I absolutely love it so far! Using the alternating browns and greens method, it doesn’t even stink! It even keeps the flies away.

This is just one of many updates from the garden to come. The yard looks like shit, but we’re in the processes of overseeing white clover, which is going to be great. I hate grass. We’ve talked about clover for years to aid pollinators, and we’re finally doing it. I’m looking forward to future blog posts where I can share what we’re growing. Minnesota is extremely humid and wet. 10,000 lakes and our summers are hot. Last year, we had a bountiful harvest with two raised beds. I can’t wait to see what we’ll have this fall.
