Freedom in the aesthetic enjoyment of children

When we work with children we must use the necessary tact to address that audience, the intention to understand them in their need to see, to feel, to create, to dream, and fundamentally to play, because all children are potential creators and their occupation is play.

A child only needs a piece of stick and an aisle to gallop on a horse across a wide meadow. It is enough for him to invest a saddle to have a truck that, with the magical influx of his imagination, he sets it in motion by moving its imaginary controls and levers with unmistakable dexterity.

So, it is there where the talent and sensitivity of a pleasant and prepared teacher is required to interpret that magical world in which they move with their symbols.

We are not the ones to pretend to create better than the children.

1️⃣ We must let them see their internal universe in all its dimension, without restrictions, and in this way they can tell us about it.

2️⃣ We must let them play with language, let them dissect the word to see what is inside it, let them transgress the rules of the rational and the logical and show us their own reality.

3️⃣ In other words, it is to give them freedom, because the aesthetic enjoyment that comes from art could fade away if we tie it to techniques that are only inclined to the search for a formative knowledge.

In this post I present one of our training workshops with children. The activity consisted of making up a story and telling it. First I explained to them what they had to do; I told them some examples, and then I let them work with their imagination. Some painted the story and told it, others just told it and some wrote it down. The goal they asked me for the activity was to get them to express themselves freely through literature, and that's what they did; in the video one of the girls doing her entertaining exercise while the others wait their turn.

I conclude by saying that children are capable of doing more than what is asked of them, the only thing we need to do is to value them and understand them in their capacity to produce, to invent, to let their imagination fly.
