Θαλασσάκι | La Música de Νίκος Κυπουργός que nos hizo Cantar en Griego

Hello friends. I want to start the week by sharing with you this video where we had to sing in Greek at the premiere of the El Sistema World Choir. This composition is by Νίκος Κυπουργός and its name is Θαλασσσάκι. You can imagine my face when I received this score, and the craziest thing is that it was not from the musical works we had already been preparing weeks before the international guests arrived, but the Greek delegation itself brought this music upon arrival.

¡Hola amigos!. Quiero iniciar la semana compartiéndoles este video donde tuvimos que cantar en griego en el estreno del Coro Mundial El Sistema. Esta composición es de Νίκος Κυπουργός y su nombre es Θαλασσάκι. Ya se podrán imaginar mi cara cuando recibí esta partitura, y lo más loco es que no fue de las obras musicales que ya veníamos preparando semanas antes de que llegaran los invitados internacionales, sino que la misma delegación griega trajo esta música al llegar.

While all the music was flowing, our new Greek friends brought us the score when all we had to do was to assemble everything together with the newcomers. We only had two weeks to decipher and understand this work that for us is complex, but for them it is their daily bread. It is written in seven octaves, it has 5 melodies in its musical arrangement and each one is more pierced than the other; with a choir of 140 people where we all spoke different languages it was a real challenge.

Mientras toda la música fluía, nuestras nuevas amigas griegas nos trajeron la partitura cuando ya lo que debíamos era ensamblar todo junto a los recién llegados. Solo tuvimos dos semanas para descifrar y entender esta obra que para nosotros es compleja, pero para ellos es el pan de cada día. Está escrita a siete octavos, tiene 5 melodías en su arreglo musical y cada una más atravesada que la otra; con un coro de 140 personas donde todos hablábamos idiomas distintos fue un verdadero reto.

They themselves came to the front to sing the solo line, they were the right ones because they mastered the language. The soprano is called Stavroula Anastasia Kamakari, whom of course we call just Anastasia and the contralto is called Ελένη Βασιλείου, or for us Venezuelans: Eleni hehe. Both are very talented and became friends with most of the choir. Of all the delegations that came to Venezuela, the Greeks were the only ones who stayed an extra day because of plane flights, so they accompanied some members of the choir on Monday after the congress to the presidential palace where the achievements of this global event were highlighted.

Ellas mismas salieron al frente a cantar la linea solista, eran las indicadas por dominar el idioma. La soprano se llama Stavroula Anastasia Kamakari, a quien por su puesto llamamos solo Anastasia y la contralto se llama Ελένη Βασιλείου, o para nosotros los venezolanos: Eleni jeje. Ambas son muy talentosas y se hicieron amigas de la mayoría del coro. De todas las delegaciones que vinieron a Venezuela, los griegos fueron los únicos que se quedaron un día más por motivo de los vuelos de aviones, así que acompañaron a algunos miembros de la coral el lunes después del congreso al palacio presidencial donde se resaltaron los logros de este evento global.

I sang in many languages those two weeks, but this was one of the most complicated for me. I had a hard time understanding the rhythm of the music, but luckily, one of the percussionists of the El Sistema World Orchestra was from Greece and accompanied us in the concert, together with him it became easier to feel the seven octaves of the rhythm and we were able to sing it successfully, although I am thankful I did not have a solo moment, because many words I pronounced as close as possible, but not perfect. This music is very popular in Greece and is a sailor's prayer for the sea to stay calm as they set sail. I hope you like it, it was hard for me to accept it in my life, but now I can't live without this music in my mind....

Canté en muchos idiomas esas dos semanas, pero este fue uno de los más complicados para mí. Me costó entender el ritmo de la música, pero por suerte, uno de los percusionistas de la Orquesta Mundial El Sistema era de Grecia y nos acompañó en el concierto, junto a él se hizo más fácil sentir el siete octavos del ritmo y pudimos cantarla con éxito, aunque agradezco no haber tenido un momento de solista, porque muchas palabras las pronuncié lo más cercano posible, pero no perfecto. Esta música es muy popular en Grecia y es una plegaria de los marineros para que el mar se mantenga tranquilo mientras zarpan. Espero les guste, a mí me costó aceptarla en mi vida, pero ahora no puedo vivir sin esta música en mi mente...
