MUSIC: Tribute to Artists We Lost in 2023 (ENG/ESP): PART 7 - David Crosby!

Hello everybody on HIVE, and especially the Music Community. My name is Jasper and I'm writing to you from Cape Town in South Africa!

I hope you are having a wonderful start to 2024, and that it is going to be a good, productive year for you.

Looking back at 2023, quite a few famous songwriters and musicians passed away. I thought I would do a series of weekly posts about some of them, as well as attempt to cover one or two of the songs that made them so famous.

That’s right, he’s the guy from Crosby, Stills and Nash with the mustache so glorious it looks like he belongs in an Asterix comic!

He first rose to fame as a member of The Byrds, a band that pioneered the jingly jangly 12-string guitar sound in the 1960s. In fact, one of their biggest hits was their cover of Bob Dylan’s “Mr Tambourine Man” from 1965 where Crosby organised the vocal harmonies:

In the 1970s, David Crosby is most famous for being part of the Supergroup “Crosby, Stills and Nash” which also featured Stephen Stills (famous from the band “Buffalo Springfield”) and Graham Nash (from “The Hollies”). The trio were often joined by the famous Neil Young, and then “CSN” would become “CSNY”.

David Crosby didn’t write many of the CSN/CSNY songs, but he was always the person who arranged the vocal harmony parts that made the band so famous. I’d like to tackle their song “Teach Your Children” as part of my tribute, because I want to try and cover at least one song for every one of these tribute posts:

David Crosby did write a few of the CSN/CSNY songs, as well as pursuing solo albums in his later career. The one I’d love to share with you, to send this post, is one that highlights that he was always an outspoken rebel in political matters. It is called “I almost cut my hair” because in those days, a man having long hair usually meant that he was some kind of hippie (probably protesting the Vietnam War), instead of a more conservative type of person. You can hear a more rock ‘n roll sound in this one, and the distinctive sound of Neil Young’s guitar (that also featured in his band Crazy Horse):
