HIVE OPEN MIC #175 (ENG/ESP): Reflects your Spirituality - "Hallellujah" by Leonard Cohen

Hello everybody on Hive and especially the Hive Open Mic Community! My name is Jasper and I'm writing (and singing) to you Cape Town in South Africa!

Welcome to Week 175 of the Hive Open Mic Challenge. The theme for this week translates to “Reflects Your Spirituality”. I’ve had a look through the songs I have done since I started contributing to Hive Open Mic in Week 124, and I realised that one song I could do that fits the theme is “Hallellujah” by Leonard Cohen.

This is a beautiful song that people love to sing, including very famous covers by people like Rufus Wainwright and Jeff Buckley, but here is the original:

And here’s the version by Rufus Wainwright that you might recognise if you’ve ever watched the movie “Shrek”:

What’s really interesting about this song is that it starts with the following lines:

“I heard there was a secret chord, that David played and it pleased the Lord, but you don’t really care for music do yah?
It goes like this, the Fourth the Fifth, the Minor fall and the Major Lift… a baffled King composing Hallellujah!”

… and musically, this actually tells you how to play the song… you play the 4th major then the 5th major, then drop down (fall) to the 6th minor and then pick up by “lifting” from the 4th major to the 5th major… and you do it exactly in time with the words!

Bienvenidos a la semana 175 del Hive Open Mic Challenge. El tema de esta semana se traduce como "Refleja tu espiritualidad". Eché un vistazo a las canciones que he hecho desde que comencé a contribuir con Hive Open Mic en la semana 124, y me di cuenta de que una canción que podría hacer que encaja con el tema es "Hallellujah" de Leonard Cohen.

Esta es una hermosa canción que a la gente le encanta cantar, incluidas versiones muy famosas de gente como Rufus Wainwright y Jeff Buckley, pero aquí está la original:
