HIVE MUSIC FESTIVAL Week 67 First Round (ENG-ESP): "Have I Told You Lately" Van Morrison/Rod Stewart

Let’s continue the theme I thought of for weeks 64 to 66, where I tackle some songs that were originally released by one artist or band, but also have a very successful famous cover version released by another band or artist. I can then show you both versions and you let me know which one you prefer!

In my honest, personal (subjective!) opinion, I’m going to give that one a TIE (call it a draw). Green Day’s video was very touching with footage of survivors from the conflict in Darfur, Sudan, and I like how the sound gets more intense with each verse. However, there is something about Green Day’s general sound that is just a little bit too predictable and mainstream for rock music in my opinion – what do you think?

Today I would like to tackle “Have I Told You Lately” originally by Van Morrison. It was released quite late in his career, on his nineteenth studio album “Avalon Sunset” in 1989! This is a fantastic song. What is interesting about it is that it is perceived by most people to be a romantic ballad, and is often played at weddings… but the lyrics were originally intended to be a prayer to the Lord, which is why the song can feel a bit bigger than your average romantic ballad. The song received a Grammy for best Pop Collaboration with Vocals.

Rod Stewart first covered the song in 1991 on his album “Vagabond Heart”. Here is that version:

However, he loved the song so much that he released a live, unplugged version on his 1993 album “Unplugged… and Seated”, where he was backed up by a mini-orchestra of fantastic musicians, and it was this version that became a real chart topper:
