HIVE OPEN MIC #202 (ENG/ESP): Telling a Story -"Tweeter & the Monkey Man" by The Traveling Wilburys!

Hello everybody on Hive and especially the Hive Open Mic Community! My name is Jasper and I'm writing (and singing) to you from Cape Town in South Africa!

Welcome to Week 202 of the Hive Open Mic Challenge. The theme for this week is “Contando una Historia”, which translates to “Telling a Story”!

For those of you who don’t know, I’ve decided to alter my Three Tune Tuesday posts to be based around the Hive Open Mic theme of the week, and how I would go about tackling it. I love songs that tell a story, and it’s a pity I could only recommend three!:

• “Arthur McBride” by Paul Brady
• “Tweeter and the Monkey Man” by The Traveling Wilburys
• “Walt Grace’s Submarine Test, January 1967” by John Mayer

So let me tackle another favourite! The Traveling Wilburys was a “supergroup” made up of amazing artists like Bob Dylan, George Harrison (of the Beatles), Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne and Roy Orbison. I grew up on their wonderful album being played in the car on holiday road-trips.

In fact, my wife and I love their music so much, we made one of their songs our first dance at our wedding, and when the doctor (performing the C-section at the birth of our baby daughter Madison) asked if we wanted music to be played during the procedure – we asked for this album, and I think little Maddy arrived on this particular song: “Tweeter and the Monkey Man”!

It is a crazy story-song about a duo of criminals on the run from an undercover cop, with some intrigue that the undercover cop’s sister is in love with one of the criminals! Apparently the song is a sort of tribute to Bruce Springsteen, as it is based in New Jersey and references many Bruce Springsteen songs!

The Monkey Man was on the river bridge using Tweeter as a shield

Crecí escuchando su maravilloso álbum que se escuchaba en el auto durante los viajes de vacaciones.
