HIVE MUSIC FESTIVAL Week 39 Third Round (ENG-ESP): "First Cut is the Deepest" featuring the Kalimba!

Hello everybody on HIVE, and especially the Music Zone Community. My name is Jasper and I'm writing (and singing) to you from the Garden Route, about a 5-7 hour drive from Cape Town in South Africa! Welcome to Week 39 / Round 3 of the Hive Music Festival!

After doing only original songs for the first 22 weeks, I started playing covers after running out of original material. But I thought I would make a special effort for my HMF friends and challenge myself like this: My main instruments are guitar and harmonicas: What if I had to ensure that for every cover I do for the Hive Music Festival over the next few weeks, that I must use a different instrument as well, to test my creativity and ability to learn and play with different new sounds?

And so – this week is the 17th instalment of a new series of HMF Entries called “Wacky Instrument of the Week”.

So far, we have had:

Now it is time for the 17th “Instrument of the Week” – A kalimba (African thumb piano)

The African thumb piano – here in South Africa we call the one I’m playing a kalimba. If it is slightly bigger, we may call it an mbira. It is basically a series of metal bars that you pluck, usually over a soundbox. Mine is very nice, it that it is tuned to the C-major scale, and can be perfectly tuned with a little hammer to tap the metal bars. I think it makes a beautiful lullaby like sound.

Let me use a loop pedal to play a beautiful love song by Cat Stevens / Yusuf Islam called “The First Cut is the Deepest” (also very famously covered by Rod Stewart). I can then use a second channel to record the kalimba to play back softly and add ambience to the chorus!

Ahora es el momento del 17º “Instrumento de la semana”: un kalimba (piano de pulgar africano)

El piano de pulgar africano: aquí en Sudáfrica llamamos kalimba al que estoy tocando. Si es un poco más grande, podemos llamarlo mbira. Básicamente es una serie de barras de metal que se tocan, generalmente sobre una caja de resonancia. La mía es muy bonita, eso que está afinada en la escala de do mayor, y se puede afinar perfectamente con un martillito para golpear las barras de metal. Creo que hace un hermoso sonido de canción de cuna.
