HIVE MUSIC FESTIVAL Week 36 Third Round (ENG-ESP): "Midnight Special" by CCR feat "Washboard"

Hello everybody on HIVE, and especially the Music Zone Community. My name is Jasper and I'm writing (and singing) to you from Cape Town in South Africa! Welcome to Week 36 / Round 3 of the Hive Music Festival!

After doing only original songs for the first 22 weeks, four weeks ago I started wearing the “Cover Hat of Shame”. (When I started playing music in public, one of the first places I went to was called the Barleycorn Music Club, which heavily encouraged that we try out our original songs on the audience. I even joined the organising committee to put on the little gigs for a while. So, my “cover hat of shame” joke originates from those days! Hahaha!)

But… I don’t want to just play any old cover for the Hive Music Festival! You guys are my friends and deserve something special… a special effort from me! So, I thought I would challenge myself like this: My main instruments are guitar and harmonicas: What if I had to ensure that for every cover I do for the Hive Music Festival over the next few weeks, that I must use a different instrument as well, to test my creativity and ability to learn and play with different new sounds?

And so – this week is the 14th instalment of a new series of HMF Entries called “Wacky Instrument of the Week”. Hahaha! Now I am going to look like a beginner! Which is fine! We are all friends here!

So far, we have had:

1. The Kazoo
2. The Pennywhistle
3. The Autoharp
4. The xylophone / glockenspiel
5. The Valiha (bamboo zither)
6. The ukelele
7. The piano sample sounds from the “Bongo Cat” Website
8. Random stuff I found in my kitchen
9. My toddler daughter’s baby-piano toy and rainstick
10. An antique wooden recorder
11. 25L Plastic Water drums (remnants of Cape Town’s water crisis)
12. Wine bottle whistles!
13. Exercise bands and rubber bands

Now it is time for the 14th “Instrument of the Week” – The Washboard!

I notice that as the weeks have gone by I have run out of real musical instruments and moved directly over to everyday objects that aren’t really supposed to be instruments at all!

Today I would like to introduce something that used to be a functional everyday object AND an accepted percussion instrument in the Deep South of the USA – the Washboard! My mother found an old one the other day and I assume it belonged to her mother! This was a corrugated metal frame that you rubbed you clothes over with a bucket of soapy water to clean them in the days before washing machines! However, they are an accepted percussion device in old-timey blues, jazz and country music!

I’ve looked into it a bit. Apparently if you are a serious washboard player, you are likely to play it with metal thimbles on your fingers or with spoons or brushes. You are also likely to accessorize your washboard with bells, pot lids, hooters, cowbells and other fun things to add variety and accentuate your rhythm. Let me show you a few videos of some masters at work!

Well, seeing as I’ve never looked at one before, I think it is plenty loud enough with bare fingers… and I will have to play around with accessories later. Let me just do a simple tap rhythm with the odd “scratchy slide” as I sing you the chorus of “Midnight Special” by Creedence Clearwater Revival (CCR). I recently did a full cover of this song on HIVE with guitar and harmonica (here: https://ecency.com/hive-141487/@jasperdick/ymxhpnnh) but my friend @clairemobey and I think it would be fun to try do a cover of it with old-timey instruments like this washboard and perhaps and autoharp!

Hola a todos en HIVE, y especialmente a la comunidad de Music Zone. ¡Mi nombre es Jasper y les escribo (y canto) desde Ciudad del Cabo en Sudáfrica! ¡Bienvenidos a la Semana 36 / Ronda 3 del Hive Music Festival!

Después de hacer solo canciones originales durante las primeras 22 semanas, hace cuatro semanas comencé a usar el “Cover Hat of Shame”. *(Cuando comencé a tocar música en público, uno de los primeros lugares a los que fui fue el Barleycorn Music Club, que animaba mucho a probar nuestras canciones originales con la audiencia. Ahora es el momento del decimocuarto "Instrumento de la semana": ¡La tabla de lavar!

Me doy cuenta de que, a medida que pasan las semanas, me he quedado sin instrumentos musicales reales y he pasado directamente a objetos cotidianos que en realidad no se supone que sean instrumentos.

Hoy me gustaría presentar algo que solía ser un objeto cotidiano funcional Y un instrumento de percusión aceptado en el sur profundo de los EE. UU.: ¡la tabla de lavar! ¡Mi madre encontró uno viejo el otro día y asumo que pertenecía a su madre! ¡Este era un marco de metal corrugado sobre el que frotabas la ropa con un balde de agua jabonosa para limpiarla en los días previos a las lavadoras! Sin embargo, son un dispositivo de percusión aceptado en el blues, el jazz y la música country de antaño.

Lo he investigado un poco. Aparentemente, si eres un jugador serio de tabla de lavar, es probable que juegues con dedales de metal en los dedos o con cucharas o cepillos.
