HIVE MUSIC FESTIVAL Week 63 Third Round (ENG-ESP): "Wagon Wheel" Bob Dylan / Old Crow Medicine Show

Hello everybody on HIVE, and especially the Music Zone Community. My name is Jasper and I'm writing (and singing) to you from Cape Town in South Africa! Welcome to Week 63 / Round 3 of the Hive Music Festival! Forgive me if I sing a bit quietly, my baby daughter was having a nap… (again…)!

In week 61 I did an acoustic cover of “All Along the Watchtower”. This was a song that was originally written by Bob Dylan, but then more famously covered by Jimi Hendrix. In week 62 I did “House of the Rising Sun”, which is a traditional song, but the first person to record the arrangement we know today was Bob Dylan. He actually stole it off watching live performances by Dave van Ronk… but it was the Animals cover that we all know today!

So, sticking with that theme, what else did Bob Dylan come up with that was finished off or perfected by somebody else? Today I am going to do a song called “Wagon Wheel”!

We know that Bob Dylan came up with the chord arrangement and chorus for this song, because we have this poor-quality recording of him jamming it with his band around the time he was recording the soundtrack for the “Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid” movie in 1973. Here is that recording:

Bob Dylan landed up throwing the song away and never recording it properly. Who knows why? He probably got distracted by writing one of his hundreds of other masterpieces… By the way, the “Pat Garett & Billy the Kid” soundtrack is famous for having the wonderful song “Knocking on Heaven’s Door” on it… another Bob Dylan song with a very famous cover… this time by Guns & Roses.

Back to “Wagon Wheel” – a bluegrass-country band called Old Crow Medicine Show finally put verses to the song and released it in 2004, and it has since gone platinum, with a lot of comments along the lines of “I don’t normally like country music, but I like this!” Here is the finished product:

In fact, Darius Rucker, the famous singer originally from Hootie & the Blowfish, loved the song so much he did a very famous cover for one of his solo albums in 2013… here’s his version:
