The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed responsibility for a number of airstrikes that hit positions in Kurdish-held Erbil, Iraq over the weekend. Erbil is in northwestern Iraq, close to the Iranian border. Initial "reports" by everyone from CNN to insert alternative media personality was that a US Consulate was targeted and hit. This makes sense to a Western audience, filled with cartoon history of the Middle East. The reality is that the IRGC had targeted an ISRAELI "stragetic center" in Erbil, in retailiation for an Israeli air strike outside Damascus 10 days ago that killed 2 members of the IRGC. Well most Western audiences will hear that story and respond with "can't trust the Iranians", I respond with "can't trust governments". This is not the first time Iran has struck at what they claim are Israeli positions in Iraq. Just as Israeli strikes in Syria are against "Iranian positions". Punishing the US for something the Iranians see as an Israeli aggression is also something that has happened before. This episode seems to be the last straw in the renewed Iran nuclear talks with US. Those talks were "cut off" on Friday leading into these strikes.
Events like this shed light on the proxy war being played between Israel and Iran, with the United States literally in the middle, occupying regions of Syria & Iraq to this day.
